    The Chapman Stick

Rosemary and I saw this guy playing the Chapman Stick yesterday at our local arts festival. This was a new instrument for me. It is played with both hands by tapping instead of plucking the strings, and requires an electric pickup and sound amplification as there is no resonance chamber.

Never heard of such a thing. I guess without electric amplification it wouldn't really work. Nice sound.

Here is the inventor, Emmet Chapman, discussing his instrument.

It's a cool instrument. Tony Levin (bass player with King Crimson and Peter Gabriel who has a credits list you wouldn't believe) was an early adopter and I've seen him perform with it several times.

I saw Pino Palladino playing one when he was playing bass with Jeff Beck back in 2006. It was new to me then, and I haven't seen one since. Thanks for posting.

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

All I can say is WOW, very nice piece. Certainly one of the most enjoyable bits I've heard in a while.

                  Cheers, Dumah,
