View Full Version : Yanmar YSM8 - Good deal? Manual?

Have an opportunity to purchase a Yanmar YSM8 with wiring harness for $600 US. While I can find spare parts for the engine (belts, impellers, etc) I can't find a manual, nor can I discover if this is a good deal or not. The marina owner re-engined an HA18 catboat with a new yanmar for the owner, and the owner is selling the engine that was replaced (it spent too long getting a new transmission seal installed at a rebuilder and they were losing the entire sailing season). The marina operator (apparently no financial involvement) said it runs nicely and is going to run it again when I pick it up to confirm it's health.
I have a 20' centerboard Catboat that has the deadwood bored for a shaft but an engine has never been installed, and this seemed like a nice match.

Well, if it doesn't work out, I have another YSM8 to sell you. Rebuilt by Mack-Boring, complete with wiring and control panel. I was going to use it as a replacement for my Atomic-4, but it's just too wide for my boat.
The manual can probably be found on Ebay with a bit of patience. If not, Mack-Boring will probably be happy to sell you one for a few pounds of flesh. If you're truly screwed for one, I could probably loan you mine and you could spend an afternoon at Kinko's.
Is it a good deal? I dunno. Can't tell until you try to run it under a load. My gut tells me that the price is rather low for an engine that "runs nicely", but I haven't done any pricing research yet.

Because I'm getting a handful of email inquiries, I think I should post a clarification:
I mis-spoke above. The engine I have is a YSM12, not a YSM8.
Before anyone gets their shorts in a twist, let me say on my honor that if any of these WBF-spurned emails turns into a sale, WoodenBoat will be paid the cost of a classified ad.
