    The Soccer World Cup scandal

Any interest here? There should be because of the political implications if Qatar looses the event.
From a blog by Rick Moran'
''But this has as much to do with politics as sport, and the possibility that there will be a revote for a venue to host the 2022 World Cup would not only be unprecedented, but would probably enrage the Arab world."

The FIFA president came to the job under a shadow, and it seems he may be involved here too, Warner lobbied for Blatter and there are obvious questions.

"FIFA's chief investigator Michael Garcia is to interview all the remaining members of the executive committee who took part in the controversial vote for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.Only 11 of the 24 members - plus FIFA president Sepp Blatter - who took part in the vote in December 2010 are still on the committee, with the others having either retired or, in some cases, been banned or resigned while under investigation.

Garcia, a US attorney who is the head of the investigatory chamber of FIFA's ethics committee, is understood to be in Zurich this week ahead of a two-day executive committee meeting on Thursday and Friday."

I love watching the World Cup . The politics of it , not so much . Anything involving huge sums of money today will be tainted one way or the other .

Screw the Arab reaction, as surmised by the writer.

If the world wants a clean FIFA, then they have to effectively make it so. This potential re-vote is akin to replay review in American football.

Incidentally ( thread drift ), I saw an article that the IOC is having a tough time getting suitable candidate cities to host the 2022 winter Olympics, as Western cities have figured out the honor costs too much money. The last Olympics I can think of that made a profit was the Summer Olympics in LA that Peter Uberroth ran.

Pretty interesting, really. If you listen to how they influenced the games (allegedly) it makes perfect sense, because with all of the 'flopping' that goes on in soccer you can never really tell what's a penalty and what's not, so it would seem easy to get away with an official picking out just a couple of 'judgement calls' during a match favoring one side over the other. Awarding free kicks or corner kicks where they weren't deserved would certainly have an affect.

As far as the Olympics go, they need to choose one location for the summer Games (Athens?) and one for the winter Games (Switzerland or the French Alps?) and have it there every four years. This deal about having to manufacture snow as well as all-new facilities has gotten ridiculous, and these things just cost too much money. I would imagine that Brazil is going to go completely bust over the Olympics and World Cup.

From what I've read, Brazil will be fine because they won't end up building everything

I reckon that to cure the 'flopping' they should use the video ref. and red card anyone caught play acting for a penalty or to slow down play. There's so much money and so much gambling on even low level games that corruption is a certainty.

Evidently the world cup is not as popular in Brazil as one might have been lead to believe.
"IN 2007, when the World Cup virtually fell into Brazil’s lap, the “Lula boom” was in full swing. Growth, exports, and incomes were rising; under president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Brazil was acquiring a new presence on the global diplomatic stage; and oil had been discovered off the Atlantic coast. First the World Cup and then the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro would set the seal on these unambiguous advances. In one sense Brazil’s mega-event diplomacy has already worked, for it has brought the country an unprecedented degree of global scrutiny. But it has not been delivering quite the message intended. On the contrary, the bungled preparations for the World Cup and Olympics have dramatized many of the most important problems in contemporary Brazil: poorly accountable elites; widespread conflicts of interest, corruption, and embezzlement; a disregard for the rights and interests of the poor and middle classes."

Then you add the scandals re Qatar and FIFA and the whole circus seems just that, a circus, a corrupt one. Aus had a shot at the cup Qattar got, and despite spending a bomb of public and private money got one vote. Obviously someone out bid our bribes. There are those here that reckon they'd put Aus's hand up if it get's reallocated, but frankly I don't think we should touch it with a barge pole. Or at least not until the whole rats nest has been cleaned out, if that is indeed possible.
