You might contact Paul Morris at Cedar Tree Boat Shop in Des Moines. I have been to his shop and he always seems to be in the middle of several wood boat restorations. He seems to be quite knowledgeable. He reads the forum quite a lot, he may respond to this question. Here is a link to his web site.

What does the "1926 lake union, missouri" in your message mean?

Is this by chance a Lake Union I've heard about down at Lake of the Ozarks?? Possibly at Blue Anchor Marine which is going out of business. (I've been told by a customer of ours who wanted to leave a boat there prior to the ACBS National Boat Show next weekend). Forty feet is WAAAY bigger than I can handle at my little shop but if the boat can travel, I do know of several very good wood boat yard/restorers in Minnesota and Michigan.

Paul, know any good boat carpenters in Michigan who travel? My Owens needs some attention but she's to big to move easily.

Lake Union, Are you going to be down to osage beach this weekend by chance?? If so, you'll have a chance to visit with dozens of people who have had their boats professionally worked on here in the Midwest.I will be there also starting on Wed. afternoon. In our chapter newsletter, a member who is in the process of moving from our area to Lake of Ozarks for their retirement home has commented that any of us who are coming down should take time to see the "Beautiful old Lake Union bridge deck cruiser." Would be pleased to meet you if your going to be around. smile.gif

Katherine;
Your request for shipwrights who travel in the midwest is a very rare commodity. Most people who are skilled and knowlegable enough to do a proper repair generally don't need to travel. They have enough work at their shops that it is common to have a backlog of several boats depending on size of shop and reputation for good work. Here are three very good Michigan shops (there are many others also that I don't know personally) that you might ask the same question of.
Macatawa Bay Boat Works
Saugatuck, MI 49453
269-857-4556
Danenberg Boatworks
Manistee, MI 49660
231-723-9915
Great Lakes Boatbuilding
South Haven, MI 49090
616-637-6805
I hope something can work out for you.

Paul, most of these shops specialize in run abouts, which are small and trailerable. Unfortunately at 35ft and 13,000+ lbs, the Owens is neither.

"... Yes we plan on going to the show at Tan Tara..."
This event is a little too "rich" for me
so I will be dragging my 50-year-old non-wood
boat to here instead:
