Ciao,
I'm thinking to buy Festool Rotex RO 150 E-Plus orbital sander.
http://utenti.lycos.it/nimar/cat_ro150e_p3f_1.jpg
It really is a 3 in one sander? I will do fine sanding, hard sanding and polish with the sameone sanders? and have a top quality job?
Or is better to buy separate tools? (Festo 150/5 and 150/3)
Thank's
Nicolas

Nics,
I've used the 150-E - and in Rotex Mode - You can sand something down very quickly (like grinding almost..) The regular sanding mode is good too - not sure if it is as fine a finish sander as the 150/3 - I would suspect the literature could tell this info.
But I already own a PC 6" sander and couldn't do it...
However - I do own the 150/3 - and that machine puts down and increadibly fine finish.. Connected to a good vacuum, there is zero dust.. No mask necessary. I really like that one..
It's my understanding is that the 150/3 - 150/5 stands for 3mm and 5mm *circles* as part of the randomness of it all..
I'm not sure if the rotex model is switchable.
Hope this helps some - the quality is there no doubt - but the cost is too...
Take Care,
Bob

Grazie Bob,
you are right, i have no doubt on festo product...
but i do not understand if is best to buy the 150/3 for fine sanding and polish and 150/5 for heavy job.
Or simply buys the rotex that can switch between heavy sanding and finish sanding...
I'm just sure about the lot of moneys i will spend! :-(
but quality! ;)

Nics,
I got the opportunity to use the Rotex Model again..
Here are the differences;
The 150/3 is a fine finish sander
The Model you pictured is essentuially equal to the 150/5 in Dual Action Mode (which is essentially a fine finish - but not as fine as the 150/3 and when you switch it to Rotex Mode - it is great!
If you want to remove a lot of material fast - rotex mode is the fastest way I have ever done it.. I (for the first time in my life) had to use the variable speed knob on a sander and actually slow the material removal rate..
It is REALLY a high quality sander..
I may be rethinking the idea and selling the PorterCable on eBay... It might be tough to go back..
Good Luck,
Bob

Ciao,
i just buy the Festo PSQ300 jigsaw and it is really the best jigsaw i could find.
It is just a little bit expensive (290Euro) than top bosch GST135CE (225Euro) but I chose the Festo and i'm happy whit it! ;)
Now, I will buy the rotorbital sander, and I have to choose between :
-> festool 150/3 (about 300Euro)
-> festool 150/5 (about 300Euro)
-> metabo Duo (about 200Euro)
-> festool RO150 is to expensive :( (about 500Euro)
I could buy the 150/3 and after the 150/5 or RO150.
Or i could buy the Metabo Duo so i will have medium and finish sander in one...
the target job should be to work on new wood for varnishing it, a couple of boat per years...
Anyone know the products? could help me to choice?
Thank's

I had a talk with the Festool folks about this and they suggested the Rotex 6" dual mode sander (RO 150E) if you need the capability for really aggressive sanding now and then. They also suggested getting the ETS 150/3 for finer sanding...thus you end up with a good SYSTEM, although expensive ($379 + $225 USD)...but you have the ability to handle a broad range of jobs. I was assured the ETS 150/3 would give as fine a finish as you could possibly require. They did not recommend getting the 150/3 AND the 150/5... too close together in capability.
You should check out the posting
Fein vs FEstool (http://media5.hypernet.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=002653)
which has feedback from a few folks who have used the Rotex RO 150 E and the 150/3

I recently got the RO 150 for some home renovation tasks that don't lend themselves to a belt sander or random orbit palm sander. As you would expect given the cost, it's a very nice tool that operates well in both modes. That said, I would not recommend it as a substitute for a true finish sander. The right angle configuration, the size and weight, and the big pad make it ungainly for too many situations where fine sanding is called for, even though the sanding quality itself is excellent.

I already had a shop vac so I didn't buy one from Festool; I did buy their hose. The dust port on the sander is a unique shape that defies coupling to a standard hard plastic hose end or any normal adapter. Fortunately, the Festool hose is a perfect friction fit into the Fein vac.

No. I already have a random orbit finish sander, plus the usual assortment of belt and orbital sanders. I got the RO150E to assist in some tasks like stripping old paint off house parts, removing ugly joint compound texturing from interior walls, etc. I wanted something that could sand much more aggressively than the typical random orbit sander, but also leave a good finish, have really good dust collection, and withstand abusive materials. Haven't tackled all these yet with the sander, but so far, so good.
...reading between the lines, seems your question is whether a dedicated finish sander is needed. Yes. It's the best, most convenient tool for work that is part of nearly every project, whereas the RO 150E is --to me anyway--a niche tool for specialized roles. (Disclaimer: this advice is from one who uses his tools to make furniture and home repairs, not build boats.)

I'm betting the Rotex 150 is a great all round sander for those sanding epoxy glassed panels or just epoxy in general. I have read reviews from Fine Woodworking Mag that say the 150/3 is the best medium sized ROS and capable of a really nice finish bar none. I'm thinking these two sanders would make a great team and actually be a great sanding system.
