I am finnally geting to the point of turning the hull and finishing the insides. smile.gif The boat is Ken hankinsons "cuddy sport 24" from http://www.boatdesigns.com One of the first things to do is install a gas tank. I have gone all over trying to find a tank for this boat whicn needs a belly shape that runs athwartships instead of down to keel. There is minimum space between the floors and cockpit sole so the ready made plastics wont fit. I found a company called "Aftermarket Marine" http://www.amarket.com/ that gave me a very reasonable quote for a custom made aluminum tank as suggested in the building plans. Has anyone had any experience with these folks. They were very responsive to requests for quotes and their prices seem good. ARE THEY????????

Ask them if their tanks are compliant with the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) reccommended practices for gasoline fuel tanks.

I hope this isn't a dumb question but has anyone tried using a bladder as a bow tank?

Buster, I don't have any documentation that says specifically that you can't, but I wouldn't. I'm quite certain that bladder tanks will not pass DoT, ABYC, USCG, etc., regs for pressure and flame resistance. Also, I would be very worried about abrasion on the bladder skin. I may be wrong, so check with USA manufacturers of bladder tanks to see if they have any that are rated for fuel. Even if there are, I wouldn't use one.

(Corrected for dyslexic fingers errors)

MMD; Bladders are a no-no! especially for gasoline. tongue.gif Vetus makes bladders for everything except you and I AND gasoline. Another company that gave me a reasonable quote is Coastline engineering in Bellingham Washington. http://www.coastline-equipment.com/marfueltan.html
they claim that their tanks meet NMMA, US Coast Guard and ISO regs. A bad tank below decks is a ticking bomb and I don't plan on being part of someones July 4th celebration. :D Roger

Roger this is off the thread but how was the Cuddy Sport to build? I've been thinking about building one myself maybe with a small pilot house. How did you find the plans details etc. to work from?

Thanks Darrel

Frameshop, I agree, but I couldn't come up with a published regulation that said specifically that bladder tanks were a no-no. With the trend here on the forum recently for every word to be challenged, official corroboration is needed to make even the simplest of statements (even then there seems to be a penchant for disregarding legalities and professional advice), so I opted for a non-specific answer so I wouldn't have to spend days trying to justify my strong objection to the proposed idea.

Free advice is worth what you pay for it, I guess. Sorry to digress; I think that I am getting punch-drunk.

Darryl. I have been putting photos over on imagestation.com Look under "cuddy sport 24". It is my 3rd boat. I'v built a haven 12 1/2, go to www.havenbuilders.com (http://www.havenbuilders.com) and look under Roger mullette, builder; a cedar strip canoe and now this. SWMBO is asking if this is it!!!!!! Little does she know that this a disease. A good one in my opinion. :D The only known vaccine is to keep going. I am designing a hard top for this to get a 3 season boat. Borrowing from some of the "picnic boat" styling. The boat has gone together well so far. A little experimenting here and there. I would be happy to share any insight with you. Roger

Sorry, Buster, I s'pose that was a bit snotty of me. :( I'll try to improve my outlook and dialogue in the future. My personal preference for gasoline fuel tanks is all-welded aluminium with pressure-testing to ABYC standards before installation.

MMD .....Aluminum is way better than the old galvinized tanks from the 50's that flakes off and cloggs the fuel system eh? What the heck were those builders thinking back then? :D
