View Full Version : Bronze fetish!
I'm becoming obsessed with replacing SS fittings on my boat with bronze. A couple of questions.
The outwale has a 1/2" half-oval SS rubrail attached. Edge coaming on the gunwales of the cockpit have what I thought was bronze half-oval. After 2 hours of searching the web and catalogs, I can't find bronze half-oval, but I do find brass half-oval. Is it possible that the half-oval on my gunwale coaming is brass? It is corroded like bronze...no green.
Next question. I have a SS safety rail around the bow deck:

Has anyone ever seen bronze used for this purpose?

First Catch a Rabbit... :D
O&O East, check out the CDA site( Copper Development A...something), for possible suppliers of what you seek.
Proper Bronze for a bow pulpit is another thing.
Some types may be weldable but IIRC, brazing is the usual way of joining Bronze but again hit that site for more accurate info.
SS, AL and Monel all can be TIG'd and Monel is up to 90% Copper so its possible that you just might find an alloy that would work.
From an Aesthetic point of view I dunno as I would like a big bronze thingy sitting up on my foredeck like that? Ah ha weight, Bronze vs SS, now there is another consideration to look into.

Dave...there's no welding involved in the rail system that's up there now. It's deck stanchions, t connections, and SS tubing. I've found bronze tube, although it's referred to as cored bronze rod, but no fittings.
What about bronze vs. brass half-oval. Jamestown carries brass...I don't know what brass is, versus bronze. I've always seen green corrosion on brass, but not on bronze. Is it possible that the half-oval on the wear susceptible coamings on my cockpit gunwales is a type of brass that doesn't corrode green?
PS weight is not a problem. she's bow light anyway, and what's a few extra pounds gonna mean to a displacement tub like this?

O.K., I'll bite. I'm a hardcore bronze junkie.Even make fake verdigree paint for that which I can't make out of bronze. I have found in scrapyards some very old gas pipes in S.F. that are bronze. But to date, I've only found about 30 feet of it. I try to sniff around all large retrofit jobs cruising for bronze and brass. Start looking

O&O East, no welding in that bow pulpit? Now that is a new one on me. Ah so like a push fit type of connections.
There is a brass used for some tooling call 'half hard type 6**' but I don't know anymore about it than that.
Typically Brass has a significant Zinc content whereas Bronze has none and as you well know, Zinc is what you have as sacraficial anodes on your shafting and other below water metal parts.

Moray MacPhail at Classic Marine (http://www.classicmarine.co.uk) is the guy to talk to about Bronze.

Another tubing source for you would be Alaskan Copper and Brass in the Seattle area. They have a downloadable catalog. See: www.alascop.com (http://www.alascop.com)
For the bronze rail fittings, you might care to contact Pete Langley at Port Townsend Foundry (I believe he has a website, or you can probably get in touch through the Port Townsend Woodenboat Foundation store (www.woodenboat.org)
We have used both welded bronze and the rail fittings on MAGIC. They do well, look good (if you are "in to bronze") and are not significantly different in weight to a good, stout s/s rail.

This guy's a little closer (on your coast at least). We got a couple of small pieces a couple of years ago (back when missing hardware was our worst problem LOL).

Can't resist the opportunity to show Sarah's bronze bow and stern pulpits.
FYI pictures taken Day 1, July 26, 2002. We'd owned her for about five hours :D
