Check with the smaller sawmills. Larger lumber retailers probably won't have it. If you have a specialty lumber supplier, they may order it for you.

Check with WoodMizer. They keep records of who buys their equipment. Find the closest one to you. Call them and ask them to go cut you some.

Ken,

I don't think the range of black locust reaches as far as BC. I think it's range is pretty much limited to Eastern North America.

For Canadian sources, maybe some of our Eastern Canadian forumites will have some ideas.

How much do you need? This outfit, ROLAINE Enterprises <rolaine@chorus.net>, out of Madison, Wisconson sells by UPS, etc. He had some on his Web site last time I looked. It looks like he deal is small quantities high quality domestic wood.

I got one order from him (crotch walnut pieces) that were exactly as he represented them and a shipment of birds-eye maple is on it's way. If it is as represented I'm going to be one happy dude.

Oops. You're right, Wayne. I didn't look at shifty's profile ... Vancouver.

I'm in Southwestern Pennsylvania. I can drive down the street here and see more black locust than you can count. It's a popular tree because the leaves give shade without blocking out all of the sunlight.

Looks like it would have to be shipped over there, regardless of the source.

At the Silva Bay Shipyard School on Gabriola Island, BC we used 'local' Black Locust for the knees, breasthook, and various other bits of the Acorn dinghy that we built last year.

Try Westwind Hardwoods in Sidney - they'll probably be able to tell you where you can get it if they don't already stock it.

McClure has a point with the wood-mizer! I know of a wood 'shop' that specializes in locally cut species (and I am not too far from you). I have purchased all sorts of 'exotic' woods from him (that I thought weren't available). If you are interested, e-mail me and I will find their name and number.
Regards,
Jake

Another source is your local arborists/tree service. It's often regarded as a trash tree by the woodenboat-ignorant. It's also an excellent firewood  .

Of course, you still have to call the Woodmizer guy to cut it up, but at least you'll have the wood.

Thanks to all for your help. I'll let you know how the build is going. (Just a bit of lofting left). Cheers!

You might try these guys:

www.nwwood.com (http://www.nwwood.com)

Located not too far from you (Tacoma WA) but I don't know what it's like crossing the border these days. Last time I was there they had some black locust at reasonable prices.
