Well, we are re-doing boy's room (nursery is becoming a 'kid's' room ... no more babies!) ;)
Anyway, we are going with a nautical theme (duh ...)--
Room has a chair rail, so underneath will be a coastal blue color, above will have a border and paint above that. Under the chair rail, will be docking line (red with blue woven in it ... from Waste Marine).
Window treatments are some old fishing net purchased from a fisherman in Maine, complete with the foam floats.
This leads me to my question:
I want to build him one of those row-boat shelve thingies ... something about 2'x5'x8" deep perhaps ... anyone have any ideas where plans like this might exist?
It would be simple enough to engineer, but I'd rather spend my energy building rather than 'designing.'
Thanks, in advance, for any information.

I'd think that there's not much designing involved. Do a flattie skiff cut in half and stood on end.

Woodworker's Supply sells plans for a rather large unit, 73" high, 26" wide and 13" deep. Plans are $12. Stock number 107-690, altho I don't know if they show it on their website--I'm looking in the printed catalog.

You might want to order a catalog anyway, great outfit, lots of stuff.
I've seen plans for smaller units in other catalogs, but don't have any to hand right now.
I'd think with a bit of head scratching and some rough sketching you could come up with something that looks like a boat and acts like a shelf pretty quick tho...

I recently completed a boat shelf for my wife, new house nautical theme in bedroom and bathroom, I found a photo in a plan book and used their overall dimensions 72" heigh by 32 " wide and 12 " deep I glued some left over T&G pine together for the back then using a batten faired out a curve for the sides, more T&G for the shelves spaced 13" apart to accomdated magazines and then bent 1/4" plywwod at 12" deep around the sides, nailing the sides to the shelves using sea fast nails, then I cut some pine 3/4" by 1/4" bent around the edge glued and clamped with spacers to give it the gunnel look then cut out knees and a breast hook and a cleat at the bow and it was complete total time 6 hours, also built a light house lamp and a rowboat lamp. good luck with your project. keep in mind that the design process is very minimal.

Free Plans are available at:

There is also a set of plans for a catamaran bookshelf. I'll have to go back and take a look at that one myself!
