Pic in # 1 reminds me of a book by Alvah Simon, I think his name was, or is, that told the story of his winter trapped in ice, with polar bears walking around on the deck. And, what makes it best was that he broke free to water, out of pack ice, by a sudden change in the wind's direction. Coulda gone bad; What luck.

I met him just before christmas as it happens. Really nice guy. I haven't read his books yet but quite a few articles over the years. I asked him where his favourite cruising spot / destination was expecting somewhere in the pacific...tuamotus or similar ... perhaps Patagonia for the more feral side but no... Alaska. and IIRc, the Aleutians
