Does anyone know where to get a rigging vice? Are they still being made or do you have to find a used one somewhere? I'm hoping there is a mail order source somewhere. Anyone know?

Check Brion Toss's site for a nice pricey one. Or build your own.

The only source I know of is Brian Toss, but it is beacoups cher ($US 650). He rents them by the month, too ($US 50/month, plus $US 650 refundable deposit).

I have been looking for the same thing --with
no luck. Understand tht Bristol Bronze is thinking about making and selling one, but do not think it has happened yet. Now planning to build my own, using some 3/4" aluminum plate picked up in a junk yard. Carlsboats

There is a really neat old home made one in the Calvert Marine Museum, Solomons MD. We got some photos of that one and had one of our volunteers build one just like it. Works great, simple to build.

Any chance we could get a look at the vise from the Calvert museum? I have not started building mine yet, and am open to suggestions. Carlsboats

Howard Gmelch,

I would like to see a picture too. I've looked at Brian Toss's on the web and the price scares me. However, I have already made my own blocks and spars. I am getting into metal work as well. I did one stayed rigging job and wished I had a vice :(

One that issimple to build and works great sounds like a dream come true.

I'm sure that the photo fell off but a year or so ago I got someone (Corey? Remember Corey?) to print a shot of my homemade light vice.

Essentially it's built off a three screw edging clamp.

You'll need to make gizmos that hang onto the wire in place of the pads - I used bronze bushing.
The other problem to solve is that the pressure out against the screws that squeeze the throat of the splice is really considerable. I made swinging plates from about 1/3 of the way out on the C one either side of the center screw that connected with a bolt through the bushings that rode on the ends of the side screws. The arc was such that the little length change really did not matter and it stiffened it right up.
Good for 1/4" or so wire.

Any bigger and you'll want to more or less duplicate something like Brion's vice.

Ian comment regarding his home made vise " It's for light wire and practice.
In actual use I hang the work verticle and pass a loop through the C that I can press down on with one foot. Makes it convenient to set up work in a crowded cockpit or below in the saloon."

If you can wait a few days, I can run down to the Calvert Marine Museum (45 minutes away) and snap a few pics. But then it becomes a matter of getting them developed, then getting something set up on the 'net (preferably the ISP-provided web page). It's (ie putting pics up on the web) something I've been meaning to do if I could find the time, and it's supposed to rain Saturday.

Thank you Ian and J. Dillon for the description and pics - oh, how the pics add confidence that I really DO understand what was described.

Tom, is Ian's like the one you know of? If not, it would be great to see pics of that as well.

Thanks, guys, for befing a team on this question! ;)

Actually, I've never noted one there, but then I wasn't looking for it, either. I was planning on going down last weekend to check out some of the boat designs mentioned on another thread somewhere, but didn't get around to it. Now I have 2 reasons. smile.gif

This sucker is about 18X24 inches, and must weigh 30-40 pounds. I hope they didn't have to take it aloft!

Carl Lane's "Boatowner's Sheet Anchor" shows a home-made rigging vice setup made from 2 C-clamps and a bench vice. The bench vice holds a C-clamp that holds the two legs of the splice together, and the other C-clamp holds the 'top' of the splice into the thimble. The clamps have their pads filed to comform to the wire and thimble.

This probably doesn't make much sense... how 'bout if I try to scan it Monday at work.
