Watching "Jaws" for the millionth time.
In the opening scene, when the young woman runs across the sand, there are lots of little picket fences on the dune above the beach. What are they for?

Dune formation. Read up on how to use the wind this way.

It was filmed on Martha's Vineyard. The entire island is covered in white picket fences.

One night in the summer of '72 a college girlfriend and I went skinny dipping off one of the south beaches of Nantucket. I'm very glad Jaws didn't come out until '75.

Same purpose as the old "snow fences" we used to have here. The idea is to slow the air/sand/snow mix to form a dune or drift where you want it.

We use to skinny dip in a family member's sand quarry, the stocked bluegill could really inflict some pain...

They also help keep clueless tourists out of the dunes to protect the vegetation that keep them in place.
