Just been down to the beach from a swim with the family at the start of a beautiful sunny long weekend, and ended up feeling the need to put in a complaint.

Most of you bemoan jet skis, but try sharing your waters with one of these.

Rules state 5 knots within 200m of shore or 50m from another boat or swimmers. This thing just came at full bore about 20m of the end of the wharf where there was a mature swimmer doing lengths of the beach and a dozen kids jumping off the wharf. I felt the need to put in a call to the harbourmaster, who was interested to hear about it and encouraged me to file an incident with Maritime New Zealand that will go on the operators commercial record, so I did.

I feel the need to go and play some loud guitar or something quick before I start whinging about the kids today...

I feel your pain. This crazy freak show turned up here a couple of years ago.

Ponce de Leon is certainly spinning in his grave, and anyone who pays money to ride screamingly fast through any place of beauty is stinking nuts.

Worth so much more that .02.
:)

Analog Kid, be proud, be very proud......and grumpy.

Seriously, fast watercraft and swimmers not a good mix.

These types of numbnuts are perhaps the only individuals on this blue Earth that make me want to take up firearm ownership and turn to violent retribution. Them and the hoons that do circle work on the road corner 20 metres down the hill from the house.

Infernal contusion engines as fun my arse!

Baa Baa tourism.

Don't knock it.

It means your tax bill is half what it would be otherwise. Employs twice as many (or more) as the mining industry in this country too.

Oh, so the rules go out the window as long as some one is earning an 'honest' dollar eh? Can't let safety get in the way of free enterprise.

Hell no... keep 'em to the rules.... but it isn't up to us to deny the sheep their pleasures (if they stay in the rules).

Its been a gradual creep by these guys. They obviously give the punters a bigger thrill by getting close to stuff. When they first started coming into the upper harbour they kept to the middle. A couple of times I was out in the kayak and they kept well away, which I was pleased about. But they've been getting closer and closer to the beach and the wharf, and getting in amongst the moored boats. Today they were well out of order though, and by the harbourmaster's reaction, I don't think I'm the first to complain.

They need to get smacked then...

trinty inlet had or still has (?) a fast boat that is supposed to be waveless…this meant it was permitted to scream along close to shore. oft times i would see an egret or other such similar bird fishing the shallows near the shore, ever so patiently waiting for fish to come within striking distance…until said jet boat disturbed everything in its path. so much for tourism. is it ok to demolish the natural order of things just so some clown can make a quick dollar?

the tourist business makes whores out of all of us... maybe I should say 'many of us'

We did the tourist rafting thing on the Shotover River out of Queenstown a long while back and were amazed that the jetboats seemed to take great pleasure in blasting up very close to the put in before spinning and waking out/ spraying the rafters.

I imagine the operators had each staked out their own stretch of water but it still seemed almost a macho nose thumbing from the jetboaters to the granola eaters.

Yeah, here in the Thousand Islands of the St. Lawrence, we're subjected to the "Wildcat" based in Brockville Ont..

In all honesty though, compared to the legion of Cigarette boats hereabouts, it hardly gets noticed.

It's just that, for old farts like me, THIS is what a T.I. tour boat should look like.

Yah..jet skis, tourists....

I've been thinking of moving to a secret locating on the South African coast to hand raise Great White Sharks.

Get em while they are ypung pups , then train then to feed by placing fish on top of a jet ski. Once the buggers get big enough , Ill haul them north to the tourist hot spots and let them free.

panic would strike...JAWS music everywhere, jet ski renters lost by the dozen.

As the tourist council panics Ill show up with my business card..SHARK BUSTERS, collect my fee , then corral my pets and move to the next jet ski infested beach.

should be able to generate a decent income.

I hear ya. But this boat is also leaving too much wake--at least around here, where the law says "No Wake" within 500 feet of shore.

Modern jet propelled problems need more modern solutions than that Paul:

I could prolly pack one of these in TMP:

. . . hand raise Great White Sharks. Get em while they are young pups , then train then to feed by placing fish on top of a jet ski. That's a very good idea, if a little impractical. I've thought seriously about a noise-seeking torpedo -keep a couple along the rail of the sailboat, then when a jet ski gets in range, flip the switch and slip it in the water . . .
