As far as hostilities are concerned. Obviously, it started long before this diplomatically but ...

You may prefer ketchup, but you couldn't see anything because of that bloody yellow mist surrounding you. Just don't inhale the stuff.

See what happens when I over sleep? Don't worry, I'll take care of it after I've had my second cup of coffee.....

Late, as usual.

Next thing you know, they'll be telling us they won it, and sending us the bill.

As far as hostilities are concerned. Obviously, it started long before this diplomatically but ...

Look up "The Battle of Tannenburg". It took place in August, 1914. The Russians lost about 200,000 men. Their general , Samsonov, shot himself.

The Battle of the Somme took place in 1916. Hardly the beginning of the Great War

Jamie could you explain to us how you think that WW1 started in January? The assassination of Ferdinand was in June, and is widely regarded as a tripping point, but things really started in August when the Germans swept through Luxembourg and Belgium.

On NPR, the other day was said to be the day I posted my thread. I suspect it was the day when HOSTILITIES erupted as I mentioned there were obviously a lot of factors and sabre rattling leading up to this.

O.K., then....

From Gareth's link, Jan. 24 1915 is the anniversary of the battle of Dogger Bank, in the near vicinity, and with the same players as the battle of Jutland, upon which Tom Hunter, George. and ACB, have been enunciating some of the finer points.

You listen to NPR?

Hope you are holding up well during this cold snap. I imagine it's pretty cold in the Finger Lakes right now. It's certainly cold in CT, VT, and NYC (Been in all 3 this week).

The war went on for more than four years. It had a beginning a middle and an end. This thread was about the very beginning.
It helps your image if you show you know the sequence of events.

The Sommes was NOT the beginning of the war. No one thinks it was Chuck.

Yes, The Somme was not. But neither was 01 Jan 1914, as per your original post, Arlie.
