I've got a chance to buy some Honduras Mahogany. The guy that has it said it's been taking up space forever and he wants to get rid of it. He showed it to me and it's beautiful wood. There's about 150 bf of 4/4 stock and he wants $3.20/bf for it. I haven't bought any wood for a while as I've only recently returned to the States after living overseas for several years. My question: Is this a good deal? Thanks.

Mike,
Thanks for the reply. The wood is a beautiful deep red. I didn't have time to really check it out thoroughly, but it looked like the genuine article to my fairly uneducated eye. The boards on top of the stack had a nice straight grain. To be honest, I was looking for some cedar to strip plank a Rabl Titmouse I'm thinking about building. However, the mahogany would make a lovely transom. The reason I asked the question is that I haven't spent much (any!) time in lumberyards for several years and $3.20 sounded unusually low for Honduras mahogany.

It's a good price. "Honduras" mahogany is pretty much a misnomer at this point. Retail prices for "Central American" mahogany range from $4.50- over $7.00 around here. I got 300 bf for $3.10 bf last winter from one of the wholesalers I use.

Could you give us more information about the source of the mahogany. It sounds like a good deal. Where is Medley?
