And we'll see the two major sports car racing series in the United States competing against each other head to head for the first time in ten years - Daytona Prototypes against open top Le Mans Prototypes. Should be fun and interesting to see. Corvette Daytona Prototypes top the speed chart in prerace testing, but the Honda LMP cars were only off by just over a second a lap. The LMP cars were generally faster in the infield and the DP cars faster on the high banks.

Mazda is bringing a prototype powered by 2.2 liter turbocharged four cylinder diesel. The car looks good. Using this year as a warmup for an all out assault on le mans in 2015. Worth noting that Mazda is the only Japanese car company to win Le Mans overall.

The LMP classes are probably the most interesting racing cars in the world. The benign dictatorship of the ACO has kept alive a couple of categories with enough freedom to appeal to imaginative engineers. The potential for controversy comes with attempts to performance balance the current crop of ,thankfully less ugly,Daytona Prototypes with the LMP2's.While I can normally find ways to watch the Le Mans 24 on streaming video and listen to Radio Le Mans,Daytona might occupy an hour or two of my time if it can be accessed on line or I can read the results on Monday.I suppose the time difference is a part of it.

Now this kind of Daytona........

The outright speeds haven't moved up there since the mid 70's, with Donahue's 221 mph Porsche lap.

I'm toying with the idea of going to Bathurst the weekend after next for the 12 Hour.

At Road Atlanta a few years ago I attended the Petit Le Mans. Both Audia and Peugot were running their diesels. As the field got strung out and and the diesels pulled away the most startling thing was how quiet they are. Under power it's a low rumble with a bit of turbo whine. Under braking you can hear the wind passing over the car and the tires on the track. Very cool.

Road Atlanta is a great venue for racing and spectators. I love attending races there. I've been to the Petit a few times and before that the six hour endurance events and before that the IMSA races.

I look forward to the day when these are rolling out of Bowling Green,Kentucky! It certainly doesn't hurt the eyes the way the older Daytona Prototypes did.

i don't know but it is ugly, hope both drivers are okay

i think the gt ferrari was slow for mechanical reason and the prototype ran up its rear at speed. . .

That's the polesitter prototype involved in this incident. They haven't got Mimo out of the car yet; this could be very bad. . .

Memo's out of the car, bypassing the infield care center and being sent by helicopter directly to Daytona's Trauma Center - 21 minutes to extricate him. :(

Yes good news that Memo was awake and communicating last night, still waiting for an update on the Memo and Metteo this morning. Hoping for the best. Memo was traveling at 138 mph when he struck Metteo's Ferrari.

Corvette 14.4 seconds behind the leading 911 in GT.

The GT class has been phenomenally competitive with Vipers, Aston Martins, Porsches, Corvettes, BMW's and Ferrari's all leading at some point.

Metteo, remained hospitalized overnight under observation.
Memo had orthopedic surgery on his left arm and leg and has a fracture in his back which will require surgery. Both drivers awake, aware and expected to fully recover.

Excellent news given the severity of the incident.

Not a great way to end a 24 hour race.

The Ferrari is penalized for "avoidable contact" on the last lap giving Audi the win, even though every replay clearly shows the absence of said contact!!!

In another class Tommy Hand's BMW was quickly catching up to the Porsche on the penultimate lap, but a dopey Ferrari driver in another class completely blocks him!

Should have been Ferrari and BMW winning their respective classes instead of Audi and Porsche. That sucks, big time.

The Chevy Prototypes clearly dominated their class and earned their 1st and 2nd place.

All in all, I'd rather not see multiple classes on course together.

Either that or give 'em horn buttons.

Next race in the series is seven weeks from now at Sebring.

I agree, maybe there were just too many cars of all classes out there.Indianapolis uses qualifying to limit the field to thirty three and while the speeds differ aren't the tracks of more or less equal size?

Paul Pless

That was unfortunate. All in all a good race, especially in DP and GTLM. We'll see LMP and DP become homogenized over the next two years - simplifying the class structure. I'm not so against multi classes on the course at the same time - its been part of endurance racing at le mans first and Daytona and Sebring for sixty plus years. I'm pretty happy with the new Corvette.
