Google them on the 'Net. There are fleets of single and double masted racing dhows, using huge lateen sails. Very beautiful boats under sail. The crews do all kinds of hiking out.

I have a friend who lived in Dubai about 12 years ago. He used to be a UK yachting magazine reporter and wrote a couple of articles about the dhow racing. An excerpt here

"They have three classes out here - 22ft, 40ft and 60ft. These are the 60footers. They have a series of races through
the season
• The big race of the year is in May, when they get towed 50 miles offshore to a deserted island. they camp here
overnight and then race back to Dubai the next day. Usually around 85 entrants, and with support boats, Naval
patrol boats and landing craft (for the TV crews) this totals well over 300 craft at the island.
• Capable of speeds in excess of 14 knots, as shown in some of the photos here. Ballast is the crew hanging on to
whatever they can find plus bags of sand that they move around the dhow."

PM me and I'll forward your message to him

These days he sails RC trimarans and in the past (guess still is) a famous Merlin Rocket designer

There is an interesting mention about wind tunnel testing of Arab Dhow sails on a New Zealand sail loft website. http://www.calibresails.co.nz/calibresails_news.php
Sorry I can't seem to upload photos properly.

Spent a year in Dubai, went out to the island to watch the racing. A big dhow with two fallukahs tied to it dragged down on us. This race is from Sir Abu nu Dir to Dubai and has a cash prize of 500,000AED.

I can only post attachments of up to 14.6kb so this is a really tiny photo. I've also got some photos of the fallukahs in Umm Suqeim harbour. They are really flat bottomed, almost no keel (maybe 8 inches deep on a 60ft) so only race downwind. When you see them training they always have a speedboat with two or three 300hp outboards to tow them back upwind.

Although they are all traditional carvel built, some of them have carbon spars and kevlar sails

The magazine Saudi Aramco World ran an article about them, I still have a copy somewhere in my library. The text of the article is online at:

sadly w/o the many fine photos the print version included.

Gerarddm, I have the article on Abu Dhabi dhow racing in the November 2001 issue #161 of Classic Boat magazine. Maybe this is what you are looking for.

I can see one out of my bedroom window. I will get my driver to swing past later on if I get a chance. It's on the hard and not rigged though. I'll have to put that race in May in the calendar.
