A few things that I find interesting.

Parts of this airline still operates as essentially two entities with separate seniority lists for flight attendants from united and continental.
Several involuntary solutions were given by management but not enough takers, though the union claims "successful airlines do not lay off workers. They work with the union for solutions." A typical us and them theme which doesn't seem productive.
United is currently hiring flight attendants with foreign language skills.

I've been in this industry for years and foreign language skills have always been a huge plus for a flight attendant. Out of these 700 furloughs, how many could have kept their job had they been actively working at learning a language for the countries that they currently service? If you want to keep a job for a long time, make yourself valuable.
