Watched the first episode of Generation War tonight. It's a German production and well worth watching.

I thought about it and decided I could do without. Liked the programme on Captain Kidd's treasure though.

I'd like to see the Japanese do a similar production. Their war is simply off the table in their education system. There was an uprroar in the press wwhen "Rape of Nanking" was published, even though the Japanese press was cited as source material.

i stumbled upon generation war and thought it a good production. however i gave it some critical thought later on and i think it contains too many cliched subplots. aside from that it is good. i did also happen across david attenborough's king city. penguins on south georgia. the closing shots of the island are truly remarkable. and i never tire of listening to mr attenborough.

The series did create some anger in Poland with one scene. A Polish resistance group ambushes a train and they find a number of wagons full of Jews which they refuse to release.

Why should they be angry? Poles were quite active in handing over the Jews, as of course was half Europe.

NYTimes review of this basically said it whitewashed the war for Germans of today.

Yes, I read that. The NYT thought it didn't contain enough mea culpa. It may have violated Article 231.

That was a great video on McNamara. I thought I didn't like war and the 20th Century unlimited war. Now, I know I don't like war. And, I have a new understanding of attrition.

If you win, you write the history.

Americans dont know of all the war crimes they comminted because they won...only loosers are tried for war crimes.

Because he is German and they don't know he is Jewish. It would not have help him if they did know. This will be made clear in pt 3.

Americans dont know of all the war crimes they comminted because they won...only loosers are tried for war crimes. Not all the losers are tried, it depends on what they have to trade. Quite a number of German experts on the USSR got to trade their knowledge for their lives and new identities.
And of course there was Unit 731.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_731

Many of the scientists involved in Unit 731 went on to prominent careers in post-war (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-Occupation_Japan) politics, academia, business, and medicine. Some were arrested by Soviet forces (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Army) and tried at the Khabarovsk War Crime Trials (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khabarovsk_War_Crime_Trials); others surrendered to the American Forces. It has been postulated that one reason the scientists were not tried was that the information and experience gained in the studies of the biological warfare was of a great value for the United States biological weapons development program (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_biological_defense_program).[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_731#cite_note-8) On 6 May 1947, Douglas MacArthur (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_MacArthur), as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supreme_Commander_of_the_Allied_Forces), wrote to Washington that "additional data, possibly some statements from Ishii probably can be obtained by informing Japanese involved that information will be retained in intelligence channels and will not be employed as 'War Crimes' evidence."[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_731#cite_note-Gold109-9) The deal concluded in 1948.
All sides commit atrocities on the battlefield. In the Pacific War few Japanese prisoners were taken, even on the rare occasions when they did try to surrender.

Why should they be angry? Poles were quite active in handing over the Jews, as of course was half Europe.

Some reviews I read concluded that the story line replicated the most conservative, retrograde German thinking: minimising the brutality and crimes of the Nazis, rendering Jews, Poles, and resistance members as cruel and monstrous, and punishing the non-Aryan characters in various ways, while the Aryans come through sunny side up. One reviewer said that it would have passed Nazi censorship with flying colours.

I liked the German series Dresden, but reckon I'll give this one a miss. Production values ain't everything.

I disagree, the main characters certainly have a Jewish friend but that's about it. I would watch it and form your own opinion.
