Pictures are, I hope, good enough for this purpose.

This is part broken in fridge

This is new part

I don't want to break anything I'll regret. Do I use pliers and turn the old part until it finds a path out, or do I pry it out?

Check Youtube

There are many examples to fixing things.

With that rod, it doesn't look like it would turn. I would start by trying to pull straight out. Then maybe try to slip a blade between the old one and the wall.

what is it?

what does it do?

It does not seem to have a key, or track or thread or any protuberance or shape that would allow it to lock/unlock during rotation. As such, my GUESS would be press fit; but as stated above , I would search YOU TUBE for refrigerator shelf bracket repairs.

Thanks; I should have thought of you tube. Guess it's my age, hard to think of modern tech.
