I can find sources for bronze rod. Does anyone know of a source for half round or half oval?

Jamestown's half round and half oval is brass. I've never been able to find either in bronze.

Roger at Bristol Bronze had a source for architectural bronze half oval in 2002. It isn't silicon bronze. I'm not sure of the make-up. After you price it, you may re-think brass. Hamilton Marine is another source for brass half oval.

How hard would it be to rip some bronze rod in half on a bandsaw?

Couldn't you route a groove in a piece of hardwood and clamp the rod to it? Someone here mentioned lately that you can get silicon bronze rod at a welding supply store for much less than at the marine places. What would be the best blade to use?
Would that blade be useless for cutting wood after?

I have succesfully split bronze rod using one of these vises upside down to keep the work from rotating. Pushing it along a foot or so then stopping and backing up the vise. This set up was for some 1"dia. 1/2 round stem iron stuff. It worked well

I have not cut much bronze but I'm pretty sure you would need a metal cutting blade, running at a much slower speed than a normal wood bandsaw and, yes, the blade would likely be shot at the end (bronze is quite a bit harder than brass or aluminum, which can be cut (with CARE!) on some types of woodworking equipment). I suspect that it would also not be easy (but doable on a decent saw) to keep the cut right on center in the rod so you would end up with somewhat uneven pieces. Finally, is rod on the order of 1/2" diameter and up available as welding rod? All the welding rod I have seen is much smaller than that, but I have never been involved in welding really big stuff...

Steven,
Send me the rod. I'll get it cut on the fancy schamzty metal cutting band saw at work. I'll return 1 half round and keep the other half round. :D
Seriously, if you really really want to make half round that way, talk to a machine shop with a proper computer controlled, liquid flushing/cooling dedicated metal cutting band saw.

Thanks for all the replies.
I need four feet either 1/2" or 5/8" wide.

Wether a machine shop make's tooling to form that or cuts it from barstock it will cost a lot, most likely you wont want to pay that much. Sugest you switch to stainless steel.

Actually, for most wooden boat related purposes I would first consider brass, unless there is lots of other stainless steel hardware on the boat. Brass half-oval seems to hold up quite well and it just looks better IMOOP.
Based on the other thread I posted a link to it does sound like bronze should be available from Davey & Co. -- if you don't mind the wait while it is shipped across the pond (and the cost!).
