i need a paddle for my thistle. i'm not willing to resort to a motor or engine, so this is my option.

i've seen those inexpensive paddles sold at walmart and other places. the price is right for something that will see little use, but they also seem awfully light. i equate light to weak.

are these paddles worth a darn?

I have owned "Feather Brand" paddles from WalMart. We even found one abandoned at Peterbell Marsh on the Missinaibi River. I currently own a similar el cheapo from Canadian Tire (North Ontario Paddle Company).

They ain't the best or most expensive, but they ARE worth the 8-10 bucks they are asking for them.

I have many that I let kids use when I know they might be whacking away at rocks, trees and each other. They hold up very well.

I'll second "Feather Brand" wooden paddles.
I still have a good, useful, slightly nicked one from 1968.
I've seen them online for about 20 bucks.

yup! feather brand is exactly what i'm talking about! they just seem so dang light! i made my canoe paddles; the front one is cherry, the other maple ( replaced the cherry rear paddle when i snapped the shaft), so light paddles seem flimsy to me. i apreciate your experience with the brand; i'll buy one tomorrow!
