Rather perverse when you think about it, considering that two days later they were killing each other again. Gives thought to the famous poster from the 1960s, 'What happens if they give a war and nobody came?'.

I'd like to think that given a choice those doing the fighting would have been quite happy to make the truce a lasting one.

I bet there was some panic amongst the officers just in case they didn't, or turned their guns around. But the Brits had the firing squad for 'cowardice' and that scenario would never have been realistic at that time.

I don't think I have ever been so angry as amongst the cemeteries of wasted lives on the Western Front.
