I'm pretty sure the Orcs and Ents could be considered a defensive force. Too bad they don't have zombies there...yet.

Nice video..

Don't think I'd want to live in one of the homes immediately under the runway approach though.

Looks cold and inhospitable.... Where are the palm trees and tin roofed snackets?

Not warm, but not cold either, sort of like Vancouver, BC.
I'll get back there one of these days.. oh yes :)

That right bank into the overcast with that mountain looming ahead was kind of intimidating. Can't imagine trying that without today's avionics.

In other words, "depressing".

I've never been. I guess I never will. Sadly. It has always been one of my dream places. New Zealand and the Isle of Skye are the first two places I'd travel if I ever came into some real money. That and wherever the next big 6mR regatta was being held. :)

Thanks for the video--punching through the cloud deck with that mountain... that's why we have boats, no?

Douglas Adams described NZ as holding landscapes that make one want to spontaneously break out into applause.

Ta! Nice viddy. Never flown there, but only drove. And in summer at that. We spent more time in Arrowtown and around the vineyards than in Q-Town proper, as there were busloads of commercial tourists mobbing the place, like lemmings looking for a cliff.

The video looks like late fall or early winter, with not much snow on the peaks. Once the snow stacks up, it's an international ski destination: Party Central.

My former girlfriend's brother Tom was a ski instructor at Alta, UT during the season and then worked in Q-Town during the NZ winter. Their dad was head of pilot training for Pan-Am, so they could fly free, which cut down on the overhead. He gave it up after ten years or so, as he missed summer.

Below the snow, those ranges are almost oliv-in(e) colour.

Sorry, that's pushing it to obscurity, this line of puns mitre peak'd already.

Me too - been in the country coming up to nine years now and still not got to the South Island.

Most likely scenario is a field trip to some Christchurch based customers some time after Christmas, which isn't really the sort of South Island trip I'm after.

Mind you, here's a snap I took on a work trip to a customer in Palmerston North about this time last year:

(actually 2 cell-phone photos taken from a moving car and stitched together.)

Tack on a day or two, Tekapo and Twizel are within easy hire-car range......alternatively, grab-a-seat to Christchurch to Queenstown and do the flight in the video. :)

Only a week for Christmas, Kerikeri......but hoping to come over next year and have a few days at our friends lodge on the Motueka (gratuitous plug: http://www.stoneflylodge.co.nz ) and then drag them away for a week down in Queenstown. The last time the four of us went there we rented rather magnificent house just out of town and it worked out considerably better than trying to get two hotel rooms in town.

The Unofficial New Zealand Department of Tourism doesn't have much of a budget. For example, I'm bumping this thread for free.

Love it. Reminds me of some arctic flying. I have to get to NZ one day. Mickey, Skye isn't that hard or expensive to get to, and it's stunning - do it, man!
