Both are the basis for a true fine liquors that are uniquely American. So I ask you...Which do you prefer?

Rye is known for imparting what many call a spicy or fruity flavor to the whiskey. Bourbon, distilled from at least 51% corn, is noticeably sweeter, and tends to be fuller bodied than rye. Due to its distinctive flavor, American rye whiskey is sometimes referred to as America's equivalent of an Islay whisky.[4] As bourbon gained popularity beyond the southern United States, bartenders increasingly substituted it for rye in cocktails like Whiskey sours, Manhattans, and Old Fashioneds, which were originally made with rye. All other things being equal, the character of the cocktail will be drier with rye.

Even though most bourbons are ryes - in a sense that the flavoring 'small grain' is rye -- usually 20% to 38% or so of the mashbill, with corn the 'large' grain. Rye imparts a spiciness in both the nose and taste, as well as some floral/herbal sensations. So, in a straight rye -- which would have at least (almost exactly, in fact, in most cases) 51% rye -- those senses are magnified, while the sweetness of the corn is lessened. Wheat, on the other hand, as in Maker's Mark has a softer, nuttier, sweeter sense to it. Many other fine more exclusive bourbons have hints of vanilla and other great notes.

Bourbon is a type of whiskey, though not all whiskey can be called bourbon. To meet the criteria, the whiskey must be made in America and aged for at least two years in new charred oak barrels. The charred oak flavors the whiskey with caramelized sugars, and gives it an amber color that develops during the aging process. Additionally, bourbon must be made from a mash of fermented grains that includes at least 51 percent corn. The other grains in the mash are any combination of rye, wheat, and barley malt—the proportions can be adjusted to play with the bourbon’s flavor. More than any other spirit, bourbon is an all-American drink. Congress itself staked national claim to bourbon in 1964 as a “distinctive product of the United States.”
Rye on the other hand...
Rye whiskey was the prevalent whiskey of the northeastern states, especially Pennsylvania and Maryland, but largely disappeared after Prohibition. A few brands, such as Old Overholt, survived it. Today Heaven Hill, Four Roses, Jim Beam, Bulleit, Knob Creek, and Catoctin Creek (among others) also produce rye whiskeys, as does a distillery at Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, which sells a version of the rye Washington made. Rye is currently undergoing a small but growing revival in the United States. Jack Daniel's has released an unaged rye product, and thus is not legally "whiskey", though an aged version is planned.

Bourbon for me. Makers is my go to for sipping and for my favourite cocktail, which is a sour. But i also like Basil Hayden and Bulleitt very much.

Prohibition era booze was some of the finest and worst. That Templeton is something special though!

I once found an unopened, old, dusty, bottle of "Old Crow" Rye Whisky that had been sitting in a garage for about 50 years.
Best I ever had.
I'm still not sure it they made better whiskey back then or if it was improved by the ageing process.

Primarily a single malt Scotch fan, but I do like Bookers and Knob Creek. I'll have to look for Knob Creek's Rye.

I like both. Whistle Pig is my favorite rye at the moment. Jefferson 18 yr reserve is my fav bourbon. Elmer T. Lee is my favorite daily drinker.

One of the things we learned in Scotland, is the aging process stops once it's bottled. So they must have made it better back then. :)

I've been drinking George Dickel No. 12 lately. The bottle says Tennessee Sour Mash Whisky and doesn't say bourbon anywhere on it, but I read that all Tennesse Whisky is bourbon. I sip it straight with usually either a beer or coke or water for a chaser. I sometimes will follow John Lee Hooker's advice and have a bourbon, a scotch and a beer.

I used to never drink Rye because of the experience that I had for several years as a teenager. I did have a surprisingly wonderful Rye about four years ago, white, (clear), from western Maryland, I think.
I would say that I hope to find that heaven has chocolate, cigars and bourbon. Judith, too. And Jenifer.

It is nice to finally give something uniquely American. I would suggest you have a snort every time one of bilge rats try to bait you into a provocative position but then again the bottle wouldn't last too long.

As for rum, a great drink for a sailor aboard a boat. But when you are ashore it is better to raid the finest cabinets and sample a good ration from the freight pimp's hold.

Irish, Canadian and Scotch. In that order. I'll drink bourbon or rye if that's all there is, but I really don't care for the taste of either.

Actually, academic, for me, as I've recently given up all alcohol forever. I've had plenty and enough in my life.

It is indeed..... and I refuse to use it as bilge bait disinfectant.

I will, however, enjoy it.... slowly.

Rum, canadian and bourbon, in that order. It's been almost a lifetime ago when I had rye. At that time it was too strong tasting. Difficult to drink, as is Jack Daniels for me. (I don't want to grow hair on my chest...LOL)

What bourbon and rye would you recommend as the smoothest and easiest to take for a lady?

Don't try to drink any of it straight up, Spinner, although I do associate with a class of ladies who do drink it straight up and in fact will drink theirs and grab yours out of your hand if you don't watch them!;)
You should try a whiskey sour(google) or Manhattan.
Are you familiar with Gin?
Not trying to corrupt you here, merely asking!

Glenfiddich is my usual-just as it comes from the bottle thanks! I'll let you know on the Rye shortly:)
