How does the military proceed with a death sentence these days?

The death sentence would need to be affirmed by Fort Hood's commanding authority, which would prompt automatic appeals at two military courts for the Army and then the armed forces. If those fail, Hasan could ask the US Supreme Court to review his case. The US president must eventually approve a military death sentence.
Five condemned soldiers are currently on military death row. If their cases are any guide, it would likely be decades before Hasan were executed. Many death row inmates have had their sentences overturned on appeal, and no active-duty soldier has been executed in the military system since 1961.
The mode is lethal injection.

The sooner the better. It's way past due.

My limited understanding is that the best punishment we can give him to to let him die unnoticed of old age in prison, denying him the martyrdom he was seeking by suicide (he probably expected to be killed on the scene) or execution (a substitute.)
