Something doesn't look normal...

Theres definitely something strange tucked away in all the ships and boats here...

Wait a second!

It's a flying saucer!?!

http://imageshack.us/a/img850/4192/d1pj.jpg

Nope! Just an advanced solar powered yacht.

Not sure how practical it is for most things, but it's a hell of a proof of concept!

She recently completed a circumnavigation powered only by solar energy.

Cool!

I thought she was retired to tourist duty in the Med after the circumnavigation?

All I know is she's headed out to Europe on the morrow.

Think that boat went down the Rhine?

Kinda cool looking in a Jetson's sorta way.

Is it a 'Trimaran' or a 'Catamaran'?

Mike

I suppose that depends how high the seas are running.

Its a little bit of a gamble taking a solar powered boat to St. Johns NFLD donchthink....

The after ends of the amas are just chopped off square. Why would they want to drag two flat "transoms" through the water?

^ My thought, too.

Sharp edged transoms give a cleaner release with less drag for higher speeds.

This boat cruises at 15kn+ which is fast enough to benefit from a transom.

AC72's have transoms.

It does feel counter-intuitive, but ^ is correct. And probably why my Dad, forty years ago, said "who cares about the air behind the car?" when I asked him whether the cut-off stern of his Volvo 145 seemed particularly unstreamlined.

If I recall correctly, car designers experimented with long streamlined rear ends, before realizing that a sharp cutoff was almost as efficient in a much smaller space.

A 145 is streamlined! Kinda like a cardboard box is.... ;) Great cars in their day though.

...Though I hated the way the second-door window screamed "saloon" before they nailed the box on the back. BY:D

Ah... but it made all the parts interchangeable. 144 & 145 all doors the same. 142, 144, 145 All suspension, exhaust, etc. the same. Made for far less expensive parts.

But we (OK, I) digress.

A Kammback is a car body style (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_body_style) that derives from the research of the German aerodynamicist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerodynamics) Wunibald Kamm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wunibald_Kamm) in the 1930s. The design calls for a body with smooth contours that continues to a tail that is abruptly cut off. This shape reduces the drag of the vehicle.

it's also why the ch-47 aft pylon is shaped the way it is

She had best stay away from Spain. If they are taxing solar energy and fining people for using storage systems, imagine the penalty for trying to smuggle the stuff out of the country:d.
