On this day in 1965 a Texas democrat signed into law the Medicare and Medicaid programs.

Lyndon Johnson signed this law in spite of the fact that republicans were calling for the downfall of all civilization if it were to take effect.

Is political courage a thing of the past?

What makes you say this? A great deal of this bill has already been implemented, and the final stages ARE being implemented is some states. In those states the cost of health insurance is COMING DOWN.

Why on earth, with this information in hand, would the Republicans want to deny funding to a bill that is actually helping many millions of people?

to respond to the thread question, it seems political courage is a thing of the past. If the Dems had the courage after passing the ACA to run ON it they could have produced an actual discussion that let the public know the facts, rather than simply here so much false information.

Republicans who would normally be moderate are very much afraid of primary competition, so they support stuff far more to the right than their history would indicate.

I sometimes wonder if some of the people in congress could have a vote held where the votes were anonymous and they could vote their conscience if they would vote differently.

One of the interesting, and discouraging, things in "Gasland Part 2" is how the EPA held one position on fracking affecting water before the 2010 elections and a vastly different position after those elections.

Courage is especially rare these days, but Obamacare will be vindicated. The Republican Party has never shown real vision and I am hoping people will remember what they are doing to the country now.

Repeat after me:

Next election, vote against every Republican, for every office, at every level. Be patriotic.
