Positive battery terminal repair?
I just cracked the terminal in my used-to-be-my-grandfather's '69 Mercedes 250. Any chance the lead could be soldered back together in place and hold? I don't want to buy a universal terminal...the old one has patina!Tags: None -
Re: Positive battery terminal repair?
Why take that chance with a high current battery terminal?
I think Mercedes advertises that they sell parts for their vintage cars so you very well may be in luck there. Any MB dealer should be able to help you out. Being a vintage Mercedes, I'd imagine it best to bring money....

Re: Positive battery terminal repair?
I have had success drilling out the post (I assume that is what you mean by terminal) and threading it, and inserting a threaded brass rod, and hooking the clamp to that. i would not ever solder a terminal. I know of one case where someone did so successfully, with a torch. I know of a case where it was not successful, too.Comment

Re: Positive battery terminal repair?
I have a die set for recasting tapered battery posts. Positive and negative posts are different.
You have to melt new lead into the die with a small (hot) torch to alloy it with whats left of the old post. I use an oxy-acetylene torch, maybe a #1 tip.Comment

Re: Positive battery terminal repair?
I don't mean the post, rather the terminal around it. I called M-B this morning and got a price of $130 for a complete cable with connectors. On the other hand I bought a universal replacement today for $1.44. So much for authenticity...Comment
