K, folks lets end this.

There are plenty of ways of degrading someones intelligence and judgement that aren't insulting to those with mental disabilities.

But unfortunately that would mean thinking fast and knowing what you are talking about and being able to use sophisticated vocabular when angry.

As a kid I thought to use "stupid" as a noun.
I am thinking politicians, darwin award winners and other evil geniuses (well most of the time) and dangerous incompetents.
Pretty strong word eh.
And all that without citing a popular prejudice.

One because you will get you in less trouble than one of the more popular slurs if the teacher catches you .
And it hits hard and flows nice.

"Get a buncha stubborn greedy stupids together and scary stuff happens, elect a bunch to both parties and not even Satan can design the horrors you will get".

Good point and well taken, but as one who has made a career of working with people with disabilities, I believe the euphemism treadmill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euphemism_treadmill#Disability_and_handicap) will be with us for a long time.

I think the intent, or motive matters more than the word

With so many more creative insults why settle for just one?
The real trick is to insult someone without them even knowing, that you're insulting them.

Euphemisms abound. "Passed" for "dead". The literally correct Whoppie Goldberg use of "pedulla".

But there is a special place for terms, nicknames, pejoratives or whatever for various groups of humans. Sometimes a word is defanged by people within the group, as happens between black people using terms that are utterly racist for me to use.

To return to the OP, usage changes, like the evolution of one of the great organizations, The Arc. It’s been through some changes: 1953 - 1973: National Association for Retarded Children (NARC); 1973 - 1981: National Association for Retarded Citizens (NARC); 1981 - 1992: Association for Retarded Citizens of the United States (ARC); up to 1992 - Present: The Arc of the United States* (The Arc) dispensing with the term “retarded” all together.

I rather like The Arc’s explanation of these changes:

“We, as an organization have been sensitive to the impact of terminology on our constituency and have adapted accordingly.*As the words 'retardation' and 'retarded' became pejorative, derogatory and demeaning in usage, the organization changed its name to 'The Arc.'*
“Today, the term 'mental retardation' remains the terminology used in the medical field and referenced in many state and federal laws.* However, 'intellectual disability' and 'developmental disability' are making their presence known, and we are doing everything in our power to make sure they're adopted more broadly.
“We strongly believe the only 'r-word' that should be used when referring to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is ‘Respect’."

To my mind, respecting any group’s sense of how they should be identified, if by any group term at all, is obvious.

People are no longer "retarded," they're "mentally challenged." The timing on a car is either advanced, or retarded. You can't have it both ways. At some point, all of this PC talk should free up some words for other use. Remember when "gay" meant happy? You can't just take words and affix your special social desires to them and then expect people who have no outward prejudices to adhere to it.

People don't have to be mentally handicapped to act retarded. It can happen to anyone at any time. Get over it.

re·tard·ed (r-tärdd)
adj.
1. Often Offensive Affected with mental retardation.
2. Occurring or developing later than desired or expected; delayed.

The word has more than one meaning or use. The fact that the PC police would fixate on the definition that most victimizes someone is not surprising. It's unfortunate for the PC crowd that most people really could care less about accommodating their overworked sensitivities. Most people also do not have prejudice against handicapped people. Most likely, mentally handicapped people would not care to find offense with the word used outside of their condition, unless it was pointed out by some PC dork that they should be. If that were the case, being called "mentally challenged", would certainly not be acceptable either.

If it gets to a point where people are directing the word at challenged people offensively, by all means, speak up. So far, I have yet to see anyone abusing challenged people of any stripe these days. On the other hand, one can peruse this section of the forum on any given day and find people being much more offensive. Words like idiot, troglodyte etc.

id·i·ot (d-t)
n.
1. A foolish or stupid person.
2. A person of profound mental retardation having a mental age below three years and generally being unable to learn connected speech or guard against common dangers. The term belongs to a classification system no longer in use and is now considered offensive.

Talking about words, their proper meaning, and the reactions of the ignorant there's that other 'N' word that indicates one's economy with generosity. I understand people lost their jobs and were threatened over that one. The stupid and deliberately ignorant and obtuse will always be with us and be pandered to by those with a agenda.

Won the first three Hugos for best graphic story; I just wish Phil Foglio's art was just a little less cutesy. He did one volume of what promised to be an epic with a guy named Freff - Dark Tangent - but they never completed the second volume, and I think it may be one of the great lost works; Freff was a good counterbalance to Foglio's style.

Great story and the leaders have brains and mortality is real even though it is sometimes temporary. Original intent was for the series to be PG-13

The Foglios mean something else when they say dominant female character is not exactly something for 13 year olds. And they know exactly what they are talking about.

Not a devotee, but I like what I've seen on BoingBoing. And I do read Girl Genius every MWF, though that's properly "gaslamp fantasy" according to the Foglios.

It's no Sandman, but it's a good story.
