I think we should keep a list.

1. Hitler was a socialist.
2. Obama is a socialist.
3. The Republicans are the party of civil rights.
4. The separation of church is a myth.
5. Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11.
6. Obama is trying to take away Americans' guns.
7. America cannot survive another four years of Barack Obama.
8. Obama continued the war against Afghanistan, therefore the invasion of Iraq was legal.
9. Obama uses drones, therefore the Chimp Squad committed no war crimes.
10. There is a great deal of incivility in American political opinion today and it is impossible to tell which side is more to blame.
11. 47 per cent of Americans are dependent on government payouts made directly to them.
12. The Supreme Court does not have the power to interpret the Constitution.
13. The states retain the right to leave the Union at will.

. . . I know I'm forgetting a couple. What are they?

How could I forget?

Those are difficult ones though, in the sense that they would make a mighty long list, as you say. How to sum it up as one list item?

Everyone who is rich deserves it.
Everyone who is poor deserves it.

Is it necessary to add:

Everyone who is rich deserves it, and deserves our respect.
Everyone who is poor deserves it, and deserves our disrespect.

Or is the inextricability of wealth and respect a separate list item?

This is starting to turn into a kind of Redipedia. At first I had in mind only those things that are based on an inarguable error of fact, of the kind that a few minutes at Wikipedia would clear up. Like the one I forgot . . .

"The Civil War was not about slavery."

That gets tricky. For example, yours are excellent but are conclusions drawn from facts that are not in dispute.

For me, the ones that are just flat wrong, in the sense of two plus two equals three, have a certain appeal.

There might also have to be separate categories for backwoods Reds like Todd Akin ("Impossible to become pregnant from legitimate rape") and the Ayn Randers. I think that's a real distinction in the Red Realm.

And so is the media. Rush, Ann, Glenn, Bill and Sean don't count because they are entertainers.

How's this: "The establishment media are liberal and spew liberal propaganda. The Red media are entertainers and spew entertainment."

This is another one that calls for a separate category -- the statement that is implied to be self-evident, but the only self-evident part is the self-contradiction. Perhaps the category could be called "Not wrong on the facts, just indifferent to them."

Good point. There are enough absurdities we probably need a detailed taxonomy of errors.

Of course one could do the same thing on the left - but since the communists are mostly gone, the really silly ideas are only held by a few dozen postmodernist professors of english literature, where many of the idiocies we've listed are believed by tens of millions.

I'll see if I can dig up a quote.
Something to the effect that scientists are promoting global warming (etc) because they get paid gov. grants to do so.

Here's one

Scientists who work for – or are funded by – government institutions know that their funding will dry up and their jobs will disappear if and when global warming stops being an asserted crisis.James Taylor
I am senior fellow for environment policy at the Heartland Institute and managing editor of Environment & Climate News. I write about energy and environment issues, frequently focusing on global warming.

How about: Science is a 'liberal' propaganda.

A few years back my daughter asked me the difference between democrats and republicans.
After thinking on it I responded that democrats want you make a lot of $$ so they can take it from you with taxes.
Republicans don't want you to make the $$ in the first place.

America is a Christian nation

You're right, that's a factual error.

Goes on and on, eh?

Time for a re-cap of the ones that are flat out factually wrong. Self-contradictions, non sequiturs and so on will come later. IOW these are not myths, or characterizations, or perspectives, or opinions. These are errors.

Some have been separated and some combined, on that basis. Discuss.

For example:

"Evolution is a theory, not a fact" -- this is wrong because it is a deliberate distortion of the word "theory", whereas
"The jury is still out on evolution" is just plain untrue.

Here goes:

1. America is a Christian Nation.
2. The separation of church is a myth.
3. The Supreme Court does not have the power to interpret the Constitution.
4. The states retain the right to leave the Union at will.
5. The Civil War was not about slavery.
6. The jury is still out on evolution.
7. Hitler was a socialist.
8. Obama is a socialist.

What strikes me is that they are mostly about basic knowledge of American history and what used to be called "civics" i.e. basic knowledge of American government.

No school ever taught them these things, so . . .

1. Why were they receptive to them?
2. Since they can be so easily disproven, why do they continue to believe them?
3. How can such a disposition not wind up as a rejection of rationality per se?

Meanwhile, the evolution thing . . . why do they care?

The wind-up seems to be, it's about identity. What it would mean to be an American if they took the facts seriously is just too large a thing to grasp -- too much work, anyway -- so they have to have a smaller identity, based on fewer and smaller facts, in the sense of having fewer and smaller implications, or they have no identity at all, which is intolerable. So they cling to error and in so doing gradually sever themselves from reality.

Are you sure about that? I bet there are plenty of schools (can you spell T, E, X, A, S?) happily teaching all this. Then there's the "repeat it until everyone believes it" thing.

Good lists, btw

You're right, anything could be going on down there.

Not just Texas but the south generally. Formerly, when people brought up things like "the Civil War was not about slavery" and "the states retain the right to secede" they were quickly dismissed as cranks or ignoroids because the people who knew better said so and the ones who didn't know kept their mouths shut.

The effect of the Southern Strategy has been to bring the southerners not just into contact with the ignoroids but into partnership with them. That's why the entire Republican Party now sounds the way only ignorant bigoted southerners used to sound.

The effect of that has been to drive the moderates out of the party, which makes the party more dependent than ever on the ignoroids, "the base" as they are now called. It's a downward spiral.
