I am planning to come to the Woodenboat Show in Mystic this year.

Any recommendations for a place to stay for a few nights in Mystic?

Coming from Hobart, Tasmania, I don't have much idea of options for the show, but my wife and I have already paid for the tickets and airfares, ready to book into somewhere nice for a few days.

Hitting the Hobart and Mystic shows in the same year, shame Douarnez isn't on this year too.

Hi Paul, what a treat, two major festivals in one year. Many of the Inns in the mystic area are quite nice. I can personally vouch for the Steamboat Inn. My wife and I stayed there last year.
The Inn is small quite and right on the river. You can walk to all most of the restaurants in the area. The Seaport is a short pleasurable walk from the Inn.
Good luck with your travels.

The Whaler. Its a bit on the expensive side for the what the rooms are. But it is central to everything boat show related including the water taxi to and from the Seaport. And most importantly, it is where Russ and Julia host their front porch event every year!

Absolutely PM Russ about the Whaler. Failing that, if you really like charm, The Inn at Mystic is very nice and I'm sure the old golden retriever still presides over the front desk.

It may be late to find a room at the Whaler but by all means try. There are motels and such to the north of Mystic but a short drive away. You'll certainly be welcome at Doug and Carter's on friday night and on the Whaler Porch late Saturday afternoon. Looking forward to meeting you and yours. You'll definitely win the Antipode Award.

If you don't have any luck in Mystic, there are motels along Rt 95 in Groton, New London, and Waterford that are only 15-20 minutes away. Springhill Suites, Rodeway Inn, etc. Not very atmospheric, but good enough for a couple nights.

Most of the local hotels are booked out.
We have booked into a nice spot a few miles away, we have a hire car anyway.
Looking forward to the show.

Just looking into it... missed the bookings. Is it possible to do a full, long day from NYC?

Is about three hours from the city to Mystic. Depending on where you are starting from.

Just looking into it... missed the bookings. Is it possible to do a full, long day from NYC?If you are flying, perhaps look at coming into BDL or PVD, it is a much easier drive to Mystic from either as compared to NYC, and I cannot imagine that there are not lots of hotel rooms in those cities.

If you look a bit outside the immediate area you will probably be able to find a booking

This.

If the traffic gods were willing, Mystic is doable in a day from NYC.

BUT, this is the high season for the Connecticut/RI coast. 95 is a work zone, traffic choked nightmare in the summer. I live in the NYC area and have a friend who keeps a boat near Mystic. 4+ hour trips each way are not at all unusual, especially if you're going to Mystic on Saturday morning or leaving on Sunday night at prime time. Definitely look for somewhat close inland lodging.

Really looking forward to meeting you Paul , you realise you are obliged to attend Lefty's on Friday night. You can undo the negative stereotype Dingo left (smile). It's in Guilford.

Unfortunately, we are not getting into New York until 8.30 on the Friday night, so we will have to stay the night near New York and get into Mystic on Saturday Morning.

If you can struggle up the road to the Guilford area on Friday night, Saturday morning at the EBS is almost as much fun as Friday night, and the drive to Mystic from here is only half as onerous. The surrounding towns are Branford, Madison, Clinton, if you need to search for lodging, or I'd be happy to do the search for you, should you desire. We really would love to meet you, and will open our doors to you at any hour, on any day should you need a place to just unwind.

Try to leave as early as possible. 7 AM is not unreasonable. Traffic builds exponentially on Sat. morning on 95. In ten years of traveling between the NYC area and Mystic I don't think there has been a single time my car did not come to a complete stop at least once on that God forsaken stretch of asphalt.

It wasn't that long ago (ok maybe it was) that there were 4(?) toll booths between NY and New Haven...you crawled from one queue to the next. Still not much better today which is why we moved to NJ. Who'd ever think you'd move to NJ for better traffic!

On the road tomorrow.

For those coming from South of NYC who may be traveling by 95, a friend went up to the Cape yesterday and reports that the Tappan Zee was by far the fastest way to go... He also said the construction around Bridgeport was insane.

Just passing this along... I'll be taking the TZ (because I always do) and 15 as far as I can to avoid that "Spawn of Satan" (I-95) for as long as possible.

Overflow parking when the two main lots are full is a couple of miles away in a field by a car dealership. There is a shuttle to bring you from the lot to the Seaport. That might be your best bet.

A don't miss at the show which I saw for the first time today is the long brick building next too the north parking lot. Someone did a post with pictures in it a while back and mentioned it's not usually open to the public, it is open during the show and one more time during the year or may be visited by a pre-arranged appt. It houses the worlds largest collection of vintage small wooden boats and motors in the world according to the girl working there. An amazing collection, guessing there's no less than 500 boats stored there from dugout pirogs to mahogany's, she had to drag me out.

That building is my favorite part of mystic. Spent many hours in there a few years ago during the Gardner Boat Workshop weekend. My only fear is that it doesn't have proper fire protection. It's a huge old brick warehouse/mill with a wood structure roof. Once a fire got started in there, the whole place would be gone. A proper, modern storage building would cost millions.

The Rozinante 'Eurynome' was my favorite at the show. Nice photo, Russ!

Yeah - I've got a weakness for double enders. Pretty boat - I must learn to sail!
