____________________________This is a tale of two black women in Cuba... One a victim of apartheid in Cuba, the other a beneficiary of apartheid in Cuba.
The first is Sonia Garro, born and raised in Cuba. She is currently residing in a Castro prison for the crime of demanding respect for human rights and the freedom to express her views. After being violently arrested, she and her husband (who is also black) have been held for more than a year by the Castro dictatorship without charges and without a trial. The world for the most part does not know who she is and there has been little to no outcry for the injustice she is suffering.

She is currently vacationing in Cuba with her husband, music mogul Jay-Z, as VIP guests of the apartheid dictatorship of the Castro family. She is enjoying the luxuries offered in Cuba only to foreigners, which is staffed by the slaves owned by the Cuban regime, the majority of which are Afro Cubans. The world has been enthralled by the stories and pictures coming out of Cuba of her and her husband strolling the streets of Havana accompanied by bodyguards and handlers from the Castro dictatorship. For the most part, there has been little to no outcry over their incredibly insensitive and idiotic decision to vacation in Cuba and provide support and publicity for a racist regime that would have imprisoned her and her outspoken husband if they had the misfortune of being born in Cuba.

Now imagine how a black Cuban woman like Sonia Garro must feel after hearing that a prominent and influential black American woman has visited her country and instead of advocating for and demanding her release and the end of the apartheid system in Cuba, she is instead partying with regime officials and enjoying amenities not only built and maintained by enslaved blacks in Cuba, but denied to them as well.

Good link Alvin.

Can't know why some folks find it offensive. Maybe if a liberal had posted it, they'd take it seriously.

If Liberals want to go to a Communist country at least they could speak out against injustice, I notice in reading about this Canadians love to go there.

odd the Canadians on this forum look for every bit of racism in this country yet spend their money happily where people are mistreated.

Individual people are mistreated everywhere. Why pick on Cuba?
Look how I mistreat you, and yet you keep crawling back for more.

When Canadians speak out about injustice in the US the howls of indignation from the righty whiteys are over-whelming..........

Why is it Canadians, Australians, New kiwi's, Brits find fault with the US and the liberals always agree with them..

Meanwhile the "elite" go to Cuba.

Here we have clear cut discrimination in cuba and these people go there without a word.

Lets face it Norm can ramble up a hollar in jawJuh and find a few people not wanting to share their square dancing and thats big news.

That's from your original OP, are the conditions for Cuban hotel staff better or worse than the conditions for US hotel staff?

But the hotel workers are crucial to this story.

According to anthropologists dispatched by the European Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Union), racism is entrenched in Cuba.[13] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afro-Cuban#cite_note-obamaeffect-13) Black people are systematically excluded from positions in tourism related jobs, where they could earn tips in hard currencies.[13] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afro-Cuban#cite_note-obamaeffect-13)

I don’t think anyone takes Beyonce as a spokesperson of anything. And the OP does not established that Cuban black dissidents are treated worse than any dissidents.

The OP story line is right wing propaganda built by perverting two truths - there is racism in Cuba and Cuba’s incarceration rate is horrible.

Pre-revolution Cuba had incredible racial problems that were masked by what one might call “Latin American exceptionalism”, really a form of denial about racism. But it’s not like Cuba, with the seventh highest incarceration rate in the world, is in denial about the problems, as we can see from this excerpt:

Conditions:
According to Cuban statistics released in The Challenges of the Racial
Problems in Cuba (2008)1, a 385-page study whose publication was
authorized by Raul Castro´s regime, described the plight of the Black
population as a whole. Written by economist (Chief Investigator), Dr.
Esteban Morales Dominguez, and based on 2005 data, it reveals that:
• Black population recorded growing impoverishments over the past
25 years;
• Cuba´s total civil and public leadership is predominantly white
(71%), despite a Black population of somewhere between 62-72%;
• 72.7% of scientists and technicians are white; 80% of the professors
at the University of Havana are white, and that average is pretty
much stable throughout the country;
• Privately owned land is 98% white; only 2% of the private sector in
land is in the hands of Blacks;
• Blacks have only 5% interests in State cooperatives and with
growing privatizing of land, they will be totally disenfranchised;
• In 2005, 65.8% of able-bodied Black Cubans were unemployed,
whereas employment of Whites exceeded 70%;
• In 2009, 70% of Cuban Blacks were estimated to be unemployed;
• The skyrocketing unemployment of Blacks has led to increased
“black market” and other criminal activities, resulting in a prison

population that is now estimated to be 85% Black, averaging in
age between 18 – 28 years;
• 68% of white Cubans declared strong opposition to inter-racial
marriage, and 58% said Blacks were “less intelligent than whites”,
according to the 2005 survey.
• Blacks overwhelmingly (60.8%) blamed "racial discrimination" in
hiring and promotion for these stark contrasts, while an
overwhelming majority of Cubans of both races agreed that "racial
prejudice continues to be current on the island" (75%).
Because less than 15% of Cuban-Americans are Black, and 85% are
Caucasians, increased Cuban-American remittances (now totaling more
than $1.5 Billion per year) only further enrich white Cubans inside Cuba,
creating greater disparities. Current US foreign policy is thus contributing
to the creation of a new white elite in Cuba.
[http://cubasource.org/pdf/cubademographics_themiamiherald.pdf]

When we talk of Cuban prisons, horrible as they are, we should be mindful of who’s Number 1 at incarceration of black people, both absolutely and as a percentage of population.

Canadians go to Cuba to vacation for a number of reasons: 1. There are few Americans there (those that are there are unlikely to have guns and are pretending to be Canadian), 2. The prices are reasonable, 3. The crime rates are very low, 4. The climate and facilities are nice., 5. The majority of the people there appear to be quite happy and content.

Ha! Your angst is misplaced, "alvinn"!
You are living in and spending your money in the country with the highest rate of incarceration in the entire world, with 70% of those incarcerated being Non-White.
How can you stand yourself? Where is your guilt?

Yes, we have noticed how you guys never do any business with any communist countries that mistreat people. :rolleyes: That is why you no longer do any business with China or any of the South American Countries.... and your oil all comes from democratic nations who share your values?

1. There is racism in Cuba
2. Cuba is Communist
3. Therefore Communism is racist
4. Duh

You must think having an eye for imperfection is the same as having an informed point of view.

I suppose there were reactionaries who got all bothered by Elton John's early tour through Soviet Russia too.

" How you gonna keep them down on the farm, after they seen Paree " is the operative concept here. Of course, a Beyonce/Jay-Z visit is a lot more aspirational than one by Dennis Rodman, LOL.

The whole Cuban embargo thing has been stupid from the beginning.
