I'll start with a fairly simple comparison and you can take it where you will.
The ignorance (willful) exhibited by some is truely appalling.

What are the Major Differences Between Socialism and Communism?
Socialism and communism can be split into two different models: an economic theory and a political theory. As mentioned before, communism can be generalized as a more extreme form of socialism. The differences of the socialism and communism theories within the context of economic and political theory are highlighted in the chart

As an economic theory, socialism allows room for some capitalism, although the majority of the profits still benefit the people overall. In a socialist economy, private ownership is allowed as long as a centralized government can regulate industry and distribute the profit based on work done. In a communist economy, there is no room for capitalism as the community owns all the means of production and profits are distributed according to need.

As a political theory, socialism can co-exist with other ideologies; even those that seem radically different such as democracy. A socialist society favors anyone who contributes labor by providing services for its citizens. In a communist society, no democratic ideologies can co-exist. Communism relies heavily on community identity and individualism, as well as private ownership, is suppressed. Instead, the community will provide for its members based on their needs.

Why would a socialist President be such a problem? The system works really well in lots of countries which have high standards of living, good healthcare, govt pensions, lower percentage of poor, high education ----on and on and on, all desirable things including hugely lower gun death rates. Your current politicians position could come a very long way to the left before they got close to even the right wing in most countries.
Americans who for whatever reason get to live in these countries dont get turned into ravening sharp eye tooth monsters with blood on their chins, why is it such a problem for so many who have never experienced it or thought it over?

Ignorance, brainwashing from the 50's and the cold war, Russian corruption...and fear of the unknown.
