    Gerard Depardieu

This is hilarious. Depardieu, fleeing French income taxes, takes a Russian passport and exchanges complements with Putin.

Attaboy, Gerard, way to land where a proper government knows how to respect individual property rights.

I believe Putin unilaterally made him a resident of France. All good theater. Depardieu should appreciate that.

Yeah, he should be proud to be Putin's little p.r. toy.

I haven't read anything about how Depardieu feels about it, have you? I'd been impressed Putin does what benefits Putin, regardless how others feel about it.

Good point, George. There are no direct quotes from Depardieu in the article I read.

If he doesn't understand what message he is sending by his actions, however, he is an even bigger fool than I thought.

Russia's top income tax rate: 13 percent

France's threatened top rate: 75 percent.

                  Where would you rather live?

When you have as much money as Depardieu, you can live anywhere you like.

I'm sure there's a lot to like about Russia, but Depardieu is a frenchman and France is a great country. It would seem natural that he would want to live there.

It almost seems like his money is telling him where to live and not the other way round.

I should hope I never have so much money that it starts giving me orders.

I wonder how many of our fellow forumites will be joining him in Russia. They sure seemed upset when our top rate went from 36 to 39%.

Depardieu,s point of view is that he already paid truckloads of income tax, and he doesn't mind paying at that same rate.
He just got galled when the socialists were going to tax not a bit but a truckload more.

It has nothing to do with where you live, just where you choose to pay your tax. As long as he spends less than 180 calendar days per year outside of France, he can claim residence wherever they accept him.
