As a relative newbie,
just how long have you grumpy old men been scowling at each other and stumping off with yer jug.?:d:d

Since as long as I can remember. Regarding 'bilge relationships', I did manage to sneak in under the noses of all the O&O's and steal Katherine from them. . .:D

Well I've proposed a few things to a couple of the wimmins over the years.

Some say they're one and the same, but I know them better than that.

Not long enough!
Every day seems to present another life or death controversy that I (and others) seem compelled to engage at the expense of our pride, sanity, and social status!
Call us Humanitarians!:)

:d:D At least 12 years Meli, What you see here is the hard core of survivors. Of course it is the bilge and can get very stinky. The major losses have nearly always occurred when a party took the bilge arguments upstairs. There's always one.

Glen, there's a funny song in that.

Andrew Craig-Bennett

The rate of attrition is quite high; people stomp off in a huff but when they do that they usually come back again - the more serious cases of loss are death (Meerkat, Ian Wright, Paladin) or, one suspects, in many cases, boredom and/or getting tired with putting up with insults (The Chemist)

I've been here since 1998...

This place is like family. You cannot chose your relatives and you cannot choose who comes here.
So you need to try to be a bit tolerant, just as you have to be with your Aunts poisonous grand child.

Sometimes that is bloody hard to do.:o

Not so, Nick... that just captures the moment when a Forum makeover took place - there was at least one, and I think maybe two, earlier incarnations - and Bob Cleek was already prominent when I first found the place... I was on leave, and cruising in Mirelle, not browsing the Internet, in August 1999!

There were a couple of reconfigs in the early days Nick, and join dates were lost.

When I joined, the bilge was Misc non boat related. So being pedantic, many of us joined the bilge at the same time.

way back in the beginning, we all used to have numbers under our names. mine was #113 i think. im trying to be the longest 'active' forumite with the least number of posts. its looking good so far. :D

i like it here because its international, doesnt cost me any money (magazines are too expensive) and ive met in person and online, some really great people. ive also been introduced to a whole lot of other (sometimes useless) stuff that i would not normally bother to look up on the net. and the forum can be downright funny at times.

one can ask a question on here and get heaps of answers without having to do the homework yourself!!!

i love everything about the forum... even with the dorks, dropkicks, deadheads and dingbats.

I first started to post here about 15 years ago. I was more interested in boatbuiilding and less in politics than I am now.

One upon a time, long long ago, there was someone with the screen name "Dutch Rub", who was obnoxious and abusive, if vaguely funny, in a pretty characteristic way. Many people believe he (or she) has appeared under various screen names since. I'm not so sure.

There are a handful who profess to know: Memphis Mike, Lefty, Jack Grebe, DKMIA, there may be others. As a relative newb, to me, it is a conundrum. As far as long term hard core Bilgerats are concerned, I would posit that Ian McC takes the cake with his prodigious output, though there are others active with even longer service that stay (to either their credit or detriment:))mostly above decks.

There are a few stalwarts providing excellent writing, thoughtful product, sometimes in even a pleasant manner. One might postulate they're being punished, or perhaps are part of the Federal Witness Protection Program - but regardless the ruse, they've improved the place. We could all name-names, but likely everyones list is different - and one risks leaving off someone deserving of being on that list.

McMike

I like the Bilge because it makes everywhere else look reasonable.

I'm sorry . . . Was that a cut? I think that was a cut.

Hey!!! Aren't you the guy who passed veiled threats to me for having a different view than yours? Aren't you the guy who said I was un-American for not buying into your gun culture?
Reasonable you say? I say look in the mirror, I think you need a reality check. ;)

Keith Wilson

One might postulate they're being punished, or perhaps are part of the Federal Witness Protection ProgramYou underestimate the prevalence of masochism . . . :D

A major attraction of the Bilge, despite its obvious flaws, is that I can have (sometimes) serious conversations about important subjects with intelligent people who profoundly disagree with me. This is rarely the case in real life. Most of my friends mostly share my viewpoint. Getting into intense political arguments with co-workers is generally not a good idea. And extended family; well, I like gatherings to be pleasant. In the bilge, one learns things that are hard to lean elsewhere. Lincoln talked about his "public opinion baths"; this is similar on a minor scale.

Ten years? Fifteen years? Long enough that Dutch, as such, had changed his name and I puzzled about it for years. Two major changes (there were some before I joined, too), the first of which took away our numbers and I memorialized mine under my avatar. The Bilge is kinda like a big pub. All sorts and all kinds and all opinions, and people can argue and yell and stomp on their soap box, and if it's not personal, you can learn things. Sometimes people step over the line and there are hard feelings for a while. Some people seem not to notice that.

Joe (SoCal)
12-22-2012, 10:42 AM
Been here since Feb 2002 as my join date is correct. Initially we all had ascending numbers if I recall Cleek was the lowest.

I spent a lot of time here shortly after 9/11 and shared a lot with some very good friends on here. In that sharing I got burned a few times by mean uptight people whos life's are so small they need to stalk people on the Wooden Boat Forum.

Aside from that, I've met some truly wonderful people online and many more in person or sailed on their boats or for a sail on Tidbit. And for that I'm a richer person.

Ian McColgin
12-22-2012, 10:49 AM
Mr Cleek was here when I first came on but a year or so later was the change that added join numbers. I chanced to post that day a few hours before Mr. Cleek and thus enjoyed member #7 while that lasted.

World's longest running circle jerk of course, lol.
Where else but in a bilge can you find a bunch of grumpy old men sitting around making each other feel better while at the same time shunning all those who don't see and feel things the way they do, BLINDLY?

Although it also reminds me of a twisted version of that old "Our Gang" skit entitled "The he-man woman haters club"....

I think this place offers far more good than bad.

I'm a newbie (2007) but I've met some great folks, made some real friendships, and learned a lot (both in the Bilge where people challenge my thinking and aboveboards where I shut up and listen). There's been times when I didn't feel so good about things and this place has cheered me up or gotten me off my tail and back at it. And I appreciate that folks can wander off a bit and return easily. That's sometimes hard to do in real life!

I was trying to restore a 1961 Lyman 16 foot outboard runabout.
I was once plain old "Mr. Know It All" but during one of the forum updates, I complained (to Scot) about the "imported" tags on my user name. Next thing I know, I'm now "Domesticated_Mr. Know It All". I now have one of the longest names here and the only user with an underscore in their name. How's that for special? I've met some forumites in person and talked to many on the phone. I've been blessed by the friends I've made here. Truly wonderful people that I may not have come to know if not for this forum. The original DutchRub is a well known and liked member of this forum who has a somewhat twisted sense of humor, not unlike my own. He has retired the Dutch users and prefers to remain unknown for now. That's all I can say.

I was just thinking-
I've been here 10 years.
Neither of my marriages lasted that long.
I've never held the same job that long.
I've never lived at the same address that long.
I've never owned a boat or vehicle that long.

As a matter of fact, the only things I can think of that have remained for as long as this place are my microwave oven and my relationship with my older kids.

I was in a tiny store on a small island yesterday. One other customer in there with us and I recognized her as a kid I coached soccer in her Middle school years, on another island, 27 years ago.
Happens bout every day.

Two of the people at least have had significant "contributions"under other names. Jamie (Airlie) posted under the name of his old Hinckley "Uncas"joined in 2004 and had an amazing 13,800 posts under that name, BF posted under his name, which he no longer wishes to use.He joined in May 2002 and has 1871 posts. My untrustworthy memory tells me that Leggett was already a regular in 2000, when I started hanging around. He was a pretty amusing character, at the time...used to trade jibes with Brian Cunningham. In 2001, he actually met up with Oyster (then known as Custom Skiffs) at his home...I seem to remember he had some notion of salvaging sunken boats and fixing them up. Then, he disappeared for a while, and turned up again for a brief time in...mmm, maybe 2003? He had an odd story about being persecuted by some guy, who was blackmailing him, or something. By then, "original" Dutchrub was winning friends and influencing people, and Oyster confided in a coded message (cleverly written so that the first letter of each line spelled part of a word!) that he thought Dutchrub and Leggett were the same person (seriously...I'm not making this up!). I've always doubted that Leggett was Dutch, but it was certainly true that he turned out to be a grade-A troll. :D

I had the same thought but not about you; wondered about me. For a couple of years the Bilge didn't do much for me, then I was drawn in. Post counts zoom because unlike up above, they require no thought at all. Just type.

A couple of the threads that really got me down here were:

Joe's discussion of the Wiccin/witch living in his rental. I don't know if he meant it to be funny (I think he did) but it had me in tears.
Kat, pmj and Meerkat talking in real time at night as if nobody else existed. They had their own private threads, also very funny.
It all reminds me of The Judgement in an I Ching pentagram, "The Well."

The cast....the town..... has changed, but the well remains the same.

The town may be changed,
But the well cannot be changed.
It neither decreases nor increases.
They come and go and draw from the well...........

But I inject a serious tone into this reminiscence at my peril. Happy holidays to friends, here and fond memories of those gone.
Another year passes, as those of us still here continue to have our fellowship (of dunces), pick and fight, argue over politics, guns and ethics,
discuss the best way to smoke a brisket or grow a tomato, how to glue a mast up, if a cat is a suitable substitute for a girl friend, what kind of varnish brush to use and what kind of boots to buy. Not a bad place to hang out, really.

Y> Of course, in that particular little Chinese town, they put in a water plant and plumbing in 1983, and the well (first dug in 253 CE) was filled in early in 1990 so that kids wouldn't fall into it. Then the water plant was torn down and rebuilt in '06 . . . ;)

And there's a mistake in the data. "Keith Wilson 25,915 12/06" is wrong. My join date shows as 10-27-1999, but that was some kind of forum software conversion date; I was here a couple of years before then. And in my defense, about a third of those posts are on that goddammed scrabble thread.

It musta been 1997 or 1998 or so that I signed on. I can't remember. The numbers don't work anymore because the "new forum" erased the old numbering system long ago. There were guys here before me, but there weren't many of us and we got to know each other pretty well. A lot of us had real life connections to the woodenboat underground before the internet came along and so we had friends in common, even if we didn't know each other to begin with. Fleming and I knew a lot of the old timers around SF Bay. Over time, a lot of those original guys passed on or simply ceased to post. I remember a fellow John Gearing from up in the Pacific Northwest used to be a font of information, but then he just disappeared. The Chemist was the prototypical "disappearing man." I will say at this point that I think his loss was a great one and probably was the result of just getting tired of providing information to people who didn't appreciate it. I fear we have lost Bob Smalser in similar fashion. Bob was something of a "legend in his own mind," but he surely did post a lot of good information and wonderful "how to do its." He's been missed of late, even though he had a few detractors.

No, he just launched a vitriolic personal attack on me, out of the blue, on the basis that

a) I am violently anti-American and

b) he was a much better friend of Chuck Phillips than I was.
