My friend John Welsford is coming to Seattle for the Woodenboat Festival in PT. I asked him if he would be interested in meeting y'all and he said:
"I would LOVE to meet the Puget Sound Elbow Benders Society! I'm free from friday am to monday pm and should the bar committee get together I can come and participate in whatever way you see fit. If appropriate I am not at all
adverse to standing up the front and speaking (my wife tells me that the trouble is to get me to shut up)."

Soooo, if you are interested in meeting a New Zealand small boat designer... I believe his schedule is open the 6-8th (the Friday-Monday mentioned above). Hopefully someone can help coordinate this since I still am not (and will never be) up to speed on Seattle Elbow Bending establishments.

BTW, I still have the pics from the PSEB meeting I was at and if anyone can instruct me on how to upload them, that would be appreciated.

I assume that since he's here for the PT Festival and those dates correspond with said festival that we're planning on drinking beer in Port Townsend. Sounds like a great plan to me since that's where I'll be and I'd love to meet him. Last years get together got a little bolloxed up due to the Saturday afternoon sailing session going a little later than the 5:30 time we had set so we may want to look at meeting at 6:30 or 7 at the beer garden? Other thoughts?

Well, We (Opal and me) are leaving for the show on the 3rd or 4th. Opal got an invitation and they told me I could come along, too. So everyone getting together in PTsounds great.

I've passed along the request for more info on Swiftsure.

I'm helping John put up a new website, and hope the bare bones will be up in a week or 2.

Shane, sell a hoon and get theeself over here! smile.gif
Surely by now you have a hoon that's outgrown the cute 'n cudly stage and is starting to cost too much for upkeep and keeping out of trouble? ;)

Now, can anyone suggest a place in PT for this if it's going to be there? I don't know PT hardly at all and I'm sure it's not going to be easy during the festival.

There is one beer garden at the Festival and since we'll all be at Point Hudson, it seems like the best place to meet. There is usually a sailing period in the late afternoon so I'm sure we'll be looking for a beer after that. We can probably fine tune this by meeting around Opal or Victoria earlier in the day. Maybe a password? "The Committee sent me." It might even net you a sail.

See you in PT

I really like his Whaler, there is a nice write-up in Watercraft #29. PT is a little far for me but I'm looking forward to the web-site.

Just wanted to bring this to the top again. Want to make sure any you who make it to the show stop to say hello and ID themselves. IF I'm not there leave a note (I might be out looking around too. Jamie, You thinking of F or S night? Or both? Would like to set it up so Sharon could make it.

Well, we're not exactly from the Puget Sound area but would love to meet some of you folks down there. My wife and I and a couple of friends from here will be there during the show. I do know where the beer garden is or was.

I was thinking of Saturday night but I imagine I'll probably hit the tent both nights so what the heck. ;) Seriously though, I will want to get together with some Port Townsend friends so why don't we decide on one or the other. I tend toward Sat. Other preferences?

We'll be arriving Thursday afternoon. Betsy will have to head back to Seattle for work on Friday and a wedding on Saturday so we won't be getting there too late. The tide turns at 10:11 AM so we'll probably get going around then to get a good push up there. Are you stopping off at Shilshole on the way up?

See you there

I'm going to leave Des Monies on Tuesday and stop in Edmonds if the winds are good. If not I'll spend the night at Shilshole. Do a daysail out of there to Edmonds on Wednesday. I've been looking at the current charts and want to leave from Edmonds on Thursday AM. I'm slower than you so want to get closer to Port Townsend for the start of the final leg.
See you there,
Ed

If the plane don't fail, John should be in Seattle tonight or tomorrow.

Hope it's Saturday -
I'm driving up from my measly little apartment for at least Saturday - I may try to come up Friday night too but the drive may daunt me. Is the locale right at the show or in a nearby pub? Oh, I guess "Beer Garden" will get me somewhere.

See you all there!

Beer Garden at 6:00 PM Saturday looks good; that's the first major break in the program's events smile.gif

See ya there!
Maybe we need identifying stickers, like "PSEBS Forumite" or something. Heh.

<sigh> We hung around the "Bar Harbor" beer tent for about 1/2 hour and I didn't recognize anyone. I've only met Jamie, Kermit and his lady once and I couldn't pick them out from the crowd. I tried to get something to make a sign, but no luck.

PT WB Festival was pretty great! Saturday was warm, sunny and virtually windless. At least 15-20 boats, including the brigantine "Lady Washington" (WA state 'flagship') ghosted about just offshore. Pic of that soon (as I recover).

Today, Sunday, it was typical WA winter weather: 25-30 kt of wind, grey clouds and rain and about 55F. Far fewer people.

A more complete report and pics coming to a topic soon. (Alas, there aren't going to be all that many pics since I was going to take lots of pics today and it turned out to be too wet to risk the Nikon digital.)

Oh, yeah... John Welsford is a gas, has an amazing ability to identify boats and has a VERY pun-ishing wit smile.gif Truely a font of information!

Sorry but life prevented me from making it :/ .

My truck got hit by a neighbor in my carport (i'm in an apartment complex) so I had a pretty complicated day. I ended up being able to come up to the show but I had to leave at about 3:00 because the truck I was renting was only available till a certain time and I still had to stop at Edensaw on my way home, yadda yadda. I'd have loved to visit, but just couldn't cram it in. Had a really nice day, though (aside from the huge hullaballoo about my truck in the wee hours.. sigh). Got to talk at length with Brion Toss before he escaped to sailing on the big boats. Lots of good ideas there. AND I bought a truckload of lovely 6/4 white oak and mahogany which will form the beginnings of my Eun Mara. Into the abyss!

Take care,
Barrett

Barret, I didn't know you were building Eun Mara. That's great! After seing your craftsmanship on that saloon table thread I'm sure your Eun Mara will be incredible. I've got my Eun Mara plans, also, but I have a kitchen to build first. :(
Will you document the building process like you did with the table? Keep us posted!

*shuffles feet*

Gosh, Steven, you make me blush smile.gif

I certainly plan to document the whole descent into madness which I expect this to be smile.gif . At the moment, I am living in an apartment which happily has rentable garages (It was one of my criteria). My shop and the lumber I just bought are jammed into one garage. Unfortunately, the garages just aren't big enough to build Eun Mara.. They're 19 feet deep, sigh. Even kity-corner, I'd never be able to wrestle the planks in that space. In the meantime, I plan to make all of my "flat" stuff - starting with stem, sternposts, frames etc, which happen first anyway. I'm evealuating options for building space. Storage units are available, but the only ones large enough with power are prohibitavely expensive ($300 per month and up - )

So, the long-winded answer to your question is, yes I will be documenting the process in photos.

Take care
-Barrett

Sorry I missed all you folks,

Did stop by and speak to Jamie for a minute. My boat and I were there all weekend in the harbor. Had several nice but short sails, the Sunday sailby was best, good but not overpowering breeze, to bad so many boats stayed in. Left the dock with two reefs tucked in and ended up shaking them out.

Anyway as usual it was all to short. Our boat is in her usual slip which is where she was during the festival but now all the plastic is coming back. I sure liked it better last weekend.

My best to all you folks and maybe we'll have a chance to meet somewhere else.

Dave

Well, I've just gotten back from the San Juans after a little post-festival cruise (sigh) and know that we somehow need a Forum Burgee to meet under since we were all in the tent at the same time. How sad that we weren't able to put this together. I had hoped I'd recognize Meerkat nad spent a lot of time looking around and asked one likely looking candidate to no avail. This is two years in a row now that this beer garden get together didn't quite make it. Next Year we'll have the skull and crossbones up!

Hmmm...I have access to the Center For Wooden Boats' industrial sewing machine.

So if anybody feels moved to proffer up design ideas...

My 10 centimes' worth...The PSEBS logo should incorporate these themes:

1. wooden boats.
2. puget sound
3. the Forum (how to represent that -- maybe some sort of 'puter/network symbol).
4. Beer. Obviously.

And to make it more difficult, the graphic should be simple -- easy to silkscreen or sew in a banner.

Graphic Artists...start your engines!

[As it happened, I was thinking before the festival that it wouldn't be a bad idea to cut a silkscreen for a tee shirt.]

Jamie, I too was looking around hoping to spot you as being the person I thought I would most likely recognize. If you noticed the guy in the black hawiian shirt, that would have been moi.

I've had the chance to correspond privately with some local forumites, and, although I know there's a small boat group (chapter of a national organization) in the neighborhood, I haven't seen any evidence of any sort of boatbuilder's society and I think that would be a great idea. I know that having met Barrett Faneuf, my boat building has been sparked.

For those who haven't noticed threads in Building/Repair about S&G vs. Lapstrake/Clinker ply and Whilly Boat Deja Vu All Over Again, I've picked Ian Oughtred's Whilly Boat as my first and Barrett is going to help, teach and lend use of tools and we're going to split the cost of a garage for building it and storing the pre-fab parts for her En Mara.

We could use a CWB burgee with 'PSEBS' superimposed over it maybe?

Meerkat, please let us know when that website is up. Sounds like there's some synergy happenin' up there in the NorthWest. :D
The only time I've been to the PNW was when my dad was working there as a recruiter for IBM. I guess it was in the early eighties. I visited in June for two weeks and had a great time. While I was there the Redhook Brewery just started selling their beer in bottles that week. Before then it was only available on tap. smile.gif Good timing, huh? I walked downtown a few nights to hear some music, they lived on 'Pill Hill', I didn't know any of the bands - it was probably Pearl Jam or Nirvana but no-one had heard of them yet!
Get an Imagestation account going so you can post those pictures.

Ah, that one. Well, the skeleton has been up for nearly 24 hours now, but the catalogue (brit spelling) is still best viewed at Duckworks Magazine (e-zine).

Check out http://www.jwboatdesigns.co.nz

You can click on a link to send email if you have questions for John.

I believe that "Swiftsure" is actually a Stuart Read design and there may be more information at the WBNZ site: http://www.woodenboat.net.nz (net not a misprint)
