Bernadette

I am currently seriously contemplating a move south to Brisbane within the next month. As David is off diving somewhere in the Red Sea, I am searching for 'suitable' crew who may be willing to do this coastal passage with me. As nothing is definite at the moment, I am just fielding possible interest....anyone? Currently the vessel is at Port Douglas. Bernadette.
PS: beware!!!! female skipper!!!!!!!! smile.gif

How much are you paying?

Bernadette
11-26-2005, 06:04 PM
zimmer, i shan't be paying the 'crew' at all. i actually would expect cost sharing for provisions etc. this is not a commercial undertaking in any form.
thanks in any case to the the others!!!! too bad!!!!would love to have you on board even for a day!!!!bernadette.

Bernadette - are we talking Cairns - Brisbane?

Any idea of how long you are planning to take? I've just got a quick strategy job to do for a mate who's taken a share in a publishing company - then I could probably do it. I could round up an extra hand or two at a guess.

The longer I think about it .... the more I like the idea of sailing down the Barrier Reef ..... When do you want to leave?

Bernadette
11-27-2005, 03:02 AM
ian, i havn't finalised yet but probably leave in two weeks or so. i will be finding out if i am definetly leaving this week. i only need and really only prefer one person (man). need to be able to cook, clean, swab the decks, haul on lines, bring me cool drinks...am i asking too much??!!!!yes its most likely cairns to brisbane. my father will want to do a short leg with me but probably only as far as mourilyan. i don't know for sure. i would be setting out only in favourable conditions. not into puching into foul weather. so how long will that take? maybe three weeks minimum and i suppose 6 to 8 weeks at the worst!!! i travel in cruising mode. i guess it would be better to contact me direct at my email address or via telephone. so i will let you know what my details are via your private message thingy here on the forum. bernadette. ps. one other i guess would be ok.

I would LOVE to come Bernadette... but alas and alak the tyranny of distance strikes as does the gremlin of workaday efforts... so I will wait for your arrival in Bunbury

Dave Hadfield
11-27-2005, 11:46 AM
Too bad you can't get Ian McColgin over there. Probably worth an email.

Bernadette
11-27-2005, 12:30 PM
Hello! Thanks for the messages...er um! Shane, hate to say this, but don't expect to see a schooner coming in from over the horizon...if you do, i'm in serious trouble..as I don't even know where Bunbury is!!!!!ha! ha!
Dave, please excuse my ignorance as I dont keep track of who's who here on the forum, but would Ian McColgin be a good person to have on board? I am genuinly interested to know. Kind regards from Bernadette.
PS. I 'm just thinking out loud here: one of the distinct disadvantages of building and sailing a gaffer in these parts is that there are few if any other experienced GAFFER and or SCHOONER sailors about...fortunatley, David and I have experience aboard PEQUOT which has amounted to a worthwhile volume of knowledge, but in the case of DECATUR, schooner sailing is still a little foreign to us. And so, we hoist our sails and learn on the run!!!!! Bernadette.

Sorry Bernadette & David this Zimmer ( Dutch ), Carlos character is a known bilge troll not even worthy of your response.

Entertain any other offers but do not feed THIS troll.

Joe, thanks for the help there. I had already formulated a low opinion of the person in question from the first post they submitted. The second is in my opinion, downright rude. And as you say, not worthy of a response. In any case, I have found a crew member who is keen and willing...from the forum, so it looks like it will be a great passage!!!Bernadette.

No problem guys, Fair winds, wish I was able to join ya.
Ask captain Jamie ( Uncas ) I'm a capable crew member, you only have to show me something once, aint that right Jamie ? ;) Although I think my mainsail furling is still suspect. :D

All the best and if you can post pictures for all of us to admire the journey.

ok! ok! i will take lots of pictures...thanks to the others for the offers of crew. i have secured a crew member but i'm not sure if he has his rose coloured glasses on or not. methinks it would be a good idea if he writes a piece about the passage before and after!!! and i will too!! now that would be interesting and fun!!!

Lessee now.......

The crew has been ordered to do 100 pushups, run 10km and 50 chinups per day until the "cruise" starts.

And..... if you check the imagestation album - there's not a winch in sight on Decatur.

Hmmmmmmm

Rumour has it that he's purchased his airfare to Cairns though! Where on earth does he buy a stinger suit south of the Tropics though?

I wonder who he is?

Thankyou Bernadette, I truly would have loved to have made the trip but it just can't happen. We have a major christmas function this year with whanau arriving at Kirsty's folks place from the U.K .and U.S. Then its a few weeks on Waione. Quite how long is spent with the family versus on the boat is currently in the silent negotiation phase.Kirsty glares at me , I raise eyebrows and then glare back.

Sounds like you've got some pretty hot crew there to me. :D

Where in Brisbane are you heading to?

I missed seeing DECATUR while you were anchored in Cairns last year. Doesn't time fly

Have a great trip.

Bernadette

Jim, as in correct nautical terminology; I am heading "towards" Brisbane and I have no idea where I will eventually be moored but most likely Manly I expect. See you when I get there?By the way, I don't doubt that I may be needing fresh crew!!!!! smile.gif

Geez Shane - you trying to get me fired before we start? With mates like you .........

Tell you something funny ....... I got offered a job yesterday - a very attractive job, 2IC in a listed public company - so I said "sure, but I'm doing something first - sailing from Cairns to Brissie" .... When can you start? "after we get to Brisbane - whatever that takes - somewhere between three to eight weeks at a guess" They're fine with that - and if they're not - tough :D

Priorities is priorities eh? Quite frankly the thought of putting my feet up for a couple of months sounds rather nice - oops, I mean swabbing the decks, Ma'am........ :D

This aint no P & O cruise... so come prepared to WORK!!!!!I am seriously starting to get very worried now!!!!

Shane, Manly in Queensland. And navigating down the coast is easy, just keep Australia on the right!!!

You know what Shane - I bet she knows how to look out for herself - and she knows that I'm an East Coast gentleman - not a ruffian from the west - and anyhow, Ma'am has bought me a neck to ankle & wrist one piece bathing suit - which is a good thing, 'cause my daughter has banned me from wearing budgie smugglers. And I'm mighty glad she did buy that stinger suit - it's about half the price of the one I was about to buy on the internet - so I told Ma'am that we've got more money to fill the larder with. I think she's planning on locking my safety harness to the wheel anyhow and bringing food to me there tongue.gif .

'ts OK Ma'am - I've been down back all day honing my muscles and co-ordination skills - carried the Triton tablesaw down the back lane and cut up about 30 metres worth of hardwood paling fence into firewood. Must admit - I was a bit knackered at the end - threw the saw into the wheelbarrow for the trip back up to the house. I was thinking about the trip whilst sawing away and I figured I better go easy - 'cause Ma'am wouldn't want me with only nine fingers .....

Hi ho, hi ho, a sailin' we will go........... :D

The new name for the skipper is .... Captain Bligh

Tomorrow I head towards Cairns...Alone...I couldn't get crew at such short notice. I made the decision to leave tomorrow this morning on the way back into Port Douglas. Only just found my chart a few hours ago!!!!...Pick up on my swing mooring in Trinity Inlet in the afternoon,it will be like being home again. I am saddened to be leaving Port Douglas and wonder why I challenge myself all the time? I managed to do some tricky docking on my own today and I have the boat well prepared...so I am at least, while being tired, satisfied with myself. Forecast is for NE 10 to 15 knots.
