Hey Norm;

You still coming out this way for the woodenboat festival in Port Townsend?

How do I/we find you at the festival?

Norm can probably answer for himself, but I am sorry to say, he told me he was going to have to cancel the trip for personal reasons.

Darn, that's too bad - I was really looking forward to meeting him and seeing Prarie Islander.

I hope it wasn't anything serious.

Yeah, I should have let you all know out of respect for the great advise you gave me. I got the applicaton to request a spot in the show about the time I gave in and decided I couldn't do the trip justice. I've been controling a bit of arthritus with expensive modern drugs, which we learn recently are no more effective than the old cheap stuff. The ole hip joint, however seems to be getting worse as time goes on. Another half inch and I wouldn't have been able to reach my foot to put on a sock. Okay, I was dealing with that but then Phyllis took the summer off. Nag nag nag. Every time I took a step she'd say, "your hurting" and want to mother me. Well, I was getting used to that too when I saw an xray of said joint. Goodness. Not a speck of cartlidge remaining. Now, that sort of got to me. Figured maybe I was not just being a whimp. So, 09Sep02 I'll have the saw bones (best in Nebraska they say) install a 1080 SS replacement. Ya s'pose they'd let me watch? We hope that we can make the show next year and do the land based parts of the experience justice.

Sheesh! That's more than I've told very many people about this. Oh, well.

Best wishes all and thanks again for your help.

Norm, we wish the best for you. Many here have enjoyed your contributions and whatever happens, this is not your brain cells. So keep the faith and the humor. For that is not controlled by cartilage loss. smile.gif

Best of Luck! Mother had the procedure done back-to-back on both hips around 12 years ago. She's now 86 and walking fine without any pain. She rides her stationery bike every morning to keep her leg muscles in condition. Mother is a firm believer that if it's broken - get it replaced!

Keep your eye on the prize - moving pain free! [The darkest part of the night is just before dawn.]

Well, I'm glad I asked! smile.gif

I'm sorry you won't be able to make it out here this year Norm, but next year, no excuses!

My best wishes and all that for an uneventful procedure and a speedy recovery.

(BTW, you really don't want to watch them do a hip replacement, especially on yourself!)

Hi Norm...
Ain't really nothing too it but it will upset your surgeon and anethesiologist if you watch...
Onct upon a time.....I wuz hauled in and waited two hours fer surgery...and hearing a very bad word..like "amputate" didn't go over very well.. After some serious "reconsiderations" on their part they decided to fix the problem and started giving me shots to put me away..........finally a nurse told me to lay down and go to sleep...which I pretended to do.......I must admit I wuzint feeling no pain....so the surgeon opened me up to the bone and wuz cleaning out splinters and such when the nurse turned around and I wuz on my elbows watching.........the female doc got all upset....but the leg izz still mine......
Good Luck

Yeow! Chuck... me? I either pass out or run like buggary as soon as they consider cuttin me!!... hate them knives!...

They had one hell of a fight when I had the snip I can tell you... three years worth!! :D ...

"Yes Shane no worries all we do is a little cut..."

"CUT???"

"of course..."

"you mean... down there?..."

"hahaha well yes Sha..."

The rest of the conversation consisted of a loud "bang" as the door slams behind me on my way up the track!! Never did get the full story of what they do...

When it happened it was sort of behind my back if you will... possumpoop planned it all... yes she did!!... planned it I tell ya!!...

That tricky little possumpoop got the surgeon on side and then after organising it all drove me to the hospital for a "going away" party for one of the nurses... "going away party" indeed!!...

Wham! Next thing I knew I was signing something or other and snoring my head off woke up later with a flamin great icepack around the family jewels!! :( ... not good!!

Soooo Norm mate... the lovely smilie isnt behind this is she?? :D ... cagey critters these female units!

Take it easy

"Many here have enjoyed your contributions and whatever happens,...."

What ever happens? Well, I must admit the best part of these deals is when the gaspasser comes in and tells ya the side effects, "...and last but not least, this could kill you." Oh, well. I've done my part in the continuation of the species. LaMess will be standing by to take my place in The Forum if necessary.

On the other hand there are several books that need to be read and maybe I can figure out the braid Bryan Toss uses to finish off the knife lanyard he describes in his book.

But you should have seen the look on Phyllis's face when she listened to the NPR special on hospital infections a month or so ago.

Bronze, eh? I wonder if that is an opition. I'll ask. One concern though, how compatible is it with lead in a salt enviornment? See. I also have another affliction, Leaditus. That's where the iron in ones blood turns to lead and settles in ones rear. Maybe a sacrificial zinc in a big toe would mitigate.

But not to worry, folks. I come from very long lived stock. Why, my dad would be 114 years old if he were still alive.

Oh, and I'll get pictures if I can.

Snile, don't smarl.

:D

Norm limped into the soda fountain a couple days ago and ordered a hot fudge sundae.

The girl behind the counter asked, "Crushed nuts?"

Norm replied, "Nope. Hip joint problem."

Norm,
Since you are a wooden boat nut I second what Roger said, except Mohogany won't work. Not hard enough. What "wood" work is Lignum Vitae. Not only is it very hard, but has its' own built in oil. Would never need oiling.

Really do what the docs say and get well. I live in central Illinois. I have a wooden boat that was built in Port Townsend at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding. (Gosh, they need a shorter name!). Maybe we could arrange to meet and go out to gether?

I too have been out of the boating and re-enacting scene all summer with a pulled achilles tendon, which has now agravated an old back problem. So I have a feeling of what you are going through. I hope to get some boating in during the 3rd season this year. If not then definitly next year.

My prayer go with you and with the doc who will do the operation.

Whether it works and you go boating to the west coast or have to curtail your traveling till such time you adapt to your new and redesigned joints, ;) you can still post smart aarss replies to wake up Shane.

Nothing to worry about really, Norm. I've two friends, one young the other old, who've gone through the procedure. Both recovered quicker than it takes to get over a severe sprain.

But just to cover all bases, start a boat before you go in. I'm sure the Great Shipwright won't let one of your jewels go unfinished.

All the best Norm. I've had my share of ortho work (knees), and the worst part is waiting for that blanket in the recovery room. Oh yeah, assuming that it's not outpatient, the Jello is usually a safe bet.

Norm.....Been sufferin with arthritis in my back for a few years now. I spent 20 years as a household goods mover and now I'm paying the price. SWMBO had to help me with my socks today (It's gonna rain) and when I read your post I had to smile.I guess we're lucky we have someone to help us with our socks. Best of luck to you on the surgery and I hope it's an end to your misery.

Make sure they remember to install a grease nipple as well. And take the pain relievers...it'll make the food taste better.

O&O Midwest, SWIMPAL and I wish you the fastest and most painless recovery on record!
Me, I go for MONEL over Silly Bronze or SS but, what the hell do I know?

Do as O&O East says, take the meds and veg out for awhile that is then get up and get back to building and sailing. Or so says I.

All the best from me too Norm, my aunt in, her 80's, has gone round for the second time. She wears em out bowling and in the garden and says the difficulty is impatience when the wound has healed but the physio is still catching up. Says she hasn't sworn so much since the last time!

Best of luck Norm. I don't know of anyone that's had a hip done recently, but my SWMBO'd inlaw (how do you like that one!) has had both shoulders replaced without a hitch. I think that stuff is getting to be pretty routine these days.
