Anyone here about this? Typhoon Tokage apparently threw an 80 foot wave across the shores of Japan. The Japanese training ship Kaio Maru was wrecked on this breakwater. Most of here crew were around 20 yrs. old. No mention of any deaths on board, although the toll on shore was said to be around 80.

Yes, it was a bad one. Looks like she should come off OK, from the photo.

News reports on our television says that several (I think I recall the number as sixteen) crewmembers were injured, but none seriously and no deaths in the grounding of the sail training ship.

Kaio Maru looks a little low in the water. Is she steel ? Somewhere in my archives, I have some pics of two other Japanese Sail Traning vessels, Nippon Maru and Kaiwa Maru, from 1961. Are they still in service ? I'll see if I can dig up the pics.

Is that zigzag black line in the water an oil slick from her?,along with looking low in the water, that could indicate that she has been holed .

Japanese sail training vessel Nippon Maru leaving Hawaii in 1961, with the barque Kaiwa Maru to the left.

Kaio Maru and Nippon Maru were built in the 80s on the lines of the two ships of the same names that they were replacing (they were built in the 30s I believe). At least one of the older vessels is a Museum I think And the other I am not sure.

The Nippon Maru photo above must be the earlier vessel. I cropped the info section (don't tell anyone but it was a copyright AP photo, dated 1961).
My father was a newspaper editor and got to see all the news releases that didn't make the paper. Our house was full of this sort of stuff.

Any updates on the Kaio Maru grounding ?
