The R-boat, Game Cock, designed by NGH, built by the Herreshoff Company. S&S gave here a more 'contemporary' rig some years later. . .

That particular R was offered for sale in 2006 for $125K

I sailed for a few years on R-57, Shadow, out of Rochester and Sodus Bay. Wood, egyptian cotton, manila, ...Makes a man dream

Sodus Bay, Seabreeze (Don and Bob's), Charlotte (Abbot's). Brings back fond memories.

I grew up on Lake Shore Blvd, half way between Don & Bob;s and Abbot's. Used to take Lake Road out through Webster, Through Pultneyville to Sodus Bay. Thomas Jefferson had referred to Sodus Bay as the second most beautiful bay in the owrld, after the Bay of Naples. Great sailing, through the 60's and 70's, for me. How time does scamper.

Don't S-boats have bendy rigs?

Don't S-boats have bendy rigs?

No, they have permanently curved masts.

What about that wire that runs over the mini spar projecting forward?

Other than the beauty of it all (and wow, is it beautiful), is there a purpose to the curved mast?

Other than the beauty of it all (and wow, is it beautiful), is there a purpose to the curved mast?that curve and the sprit type boom allow the mainsail to be flattened or given shape depending on wind strength and whether you are sailing on or off the wind. . .

A mast that is curved all the time, like an S-Boat mast, flattens the sail when you're close hauled, and deepens it was you bear away and sheet out. The S-Boat has a huge main and small jib, and this was one way to make the main more powerful for reaching.
