Pop quiz: which US metropolitan area has seven of the ten richest counties in the nation?

For extra credit discuss the significance of this.

No googling! :-)

Gotta be the Washington DC area, otherwise it wouldn't be a good bilge topic. What do I win?

Probably Washington DC area. I would say Loudoun County and Fairfax county would likely top the list

I used to think one of the signs of US superiority to Brazil is that our greatest per capita income is in Brasília, while in the US it was New York. Business leading government.

Oh well. Catching up on one more front, I suppose - or is it the US falling behind on yet another front?

I think that Connecticut is seriously considering eliminating the county thing.... We don't really use counties for anything other than the weather service advisories, sheriffs for issuing court summonses, and this sort of thing..... Fairfield county has pretty much morphed into Westchester county, New York, and nobody even seems to know exactly where Tolland county is....

That's easy....mediocre GS 11 and 12's from the hinterland suddenly become GS 15/SES superstars within three years of moving to DC. Great place to get your "high three":d

Ever drive the Maine turnpike?...... I swear there are signs that say "You just went past exit #23. Too bad we didn't tell you before the exit, huh? Next exit 73 miles. Hope you're not low on gas."...
And what ever you do, don't go over the speed limit if a potato truck passes you on a down hill grade.... 99 times out of 100 there will be a Maine State Trooper with a radar gun at the bottom of the hill, who can't see potato trucks.

SES ranges from 145K to 199K a year. I wouldn't call that rich.

In my area, there's a two mile long stretch of straight downgrade that leads into Ludlow. 50mph speed limit and, due to the slope, you practically have to keep your foot on the brake to stay at the 50mph limit. At the bottom of this mountain is the Ludlow town line where the local cops love to hang out behind the bushes with the radar gun. Everyone is doing about 60mph when they go past. The cops will let the Vermont plates go past, then jump out and tag the out-of-staters. Easy pickins'.
