I posted this one over in my Postcard from Laos thread... but I reckon its worth a thread of its own....

I was up in the hills, middle of nowhere, when I came across a barricade across the road. Stopped and "talked" to the guys there for a while and they gave me a shot of the local home brew rice wine. Wasn't bad. They gave me a slice of some sort of greenish/white melon to eat... and then I spotted a whole heap of the rocks on the road were covered in white powder. The barricade was to slow people down so they wouldn't drive over the product...

I guess that's as pure as it'll ever be. I'd rather the government legalised it and introduced food hygiene standards. I've never used it... never will.

It is apparently the best pain killer and perfect for palliative care. Sadly though governments won't allow it's use legally.

Something to do with treaties I thought. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_Convention_on_Narcotic_Drugs

Heaven the first time I'm told then you spend the rest of your days trying to get it back. As Gary says, perfect palliative medication.

Lefty,
Black tar heroin is common in the west and frequently manufactured in a simplified process in Mexico and South America. White powder heroin is more "refined" (if that's the word to use) and is actually the stuff that was originally synthesized as a more stable alternative to opium. I think technically, heroin is the white powder. In practice, both contain the active ingredients found in morphine.

Easy to google.

Black tar can contain a variable percentage of heroin, but despite the name, what makes Black Tar specific as a type is not actually its heroin (diacetylmorphine) content, but rather the greater mixture of lesser acetylated morphine derivatives—predominantly 6-MAM (6-monoacetylmorphine) and 3-MAM (3-monoacetylmorphine). This is caused by the use of the antiquated Wright-Beckett process (c. 1874), which produces a relatively crude and unrefined opiate product but does not require the complex lab equipment, high-purity acetylating chemicals or lengthy reflux steps necessary to produce pure heroin, making it attractive to clandestine drug producers.
