I was just wondering who all was going to this years festival, and especially who was going to have their boat there. I just looked over the list of who all was going to be in the show and it's truly a grand bunch of crafts. Check them out at In water list (http://cwb.org/BoatFest2004InWater.htm). I didn't see see Art's "Melinda" which I'd hoped would be there, but then I also didn't see my "Victoria" which will definitely be there. We should try to coordinate a PSEBS* get together too.
See Ya There!
Jamie
*PSEBS is the Puget Sound Elbow Bending Symposium, dedicated to the analysis of fine boats and fine brewing. :D

...20' gaff yawl, designed by Oughtred and built by Coulter/Mathias. Launched (with luck) in time for the Festival. Oh my, Eun Mara?
Alison - Christopher Cunningham
Alison is a 19' 6" lug yawl, designed by Ian Oughtred and built by Christopher Cunningham. She was launched in September, 2003.
Caledonia yawl. :D
Y'all better take LOTS of pictures and share with those less fortunate souls who can't be there.

"MELINDA" has received confirmation of her registration for the show. She'll be there... whether they've figured it out yet or not! ;)

It looks like I will probably be there (without a boat). I've a friend who very conveniently decided to get married in Seattle on July 3rd and another friend who just pointed out that there's a certain wooden boat festival happening out there that weekend...

I'll be there Saturday morning. After a few hours at the show, I'll head over to my beast, and wonder if she'll ever be ready for a public viewing...

I'm planning to be there Saturday morning for a bit and maybe again for a bit in the afternoon. If I have time I may swing by again for a bit on Sunday...

Well you all should plan to stop back for a cold refreshment later on Saturday. We could meet at Victoria (and I'll try to have some iced beverages aboard),or Melinda, or we can meet at the beer garden. One way or another, I think we should raise a toast together to this wonderful, endless and archaic pursuit.
Say 5-ish?

Well, my excuse :D for this trip is a wedding that takes place at 5 PM on Saturday so I won't be able to join you all for a cold one at that time. However, I will look for "Melinda" and "Victoria" and you can keep an eye out for me. Here's a somewhat fuzzy picture for reference...

'Fraid the weekend's a bit booked for us, so Ronin's calling in sick for the show. I'll swing myself by on monday to take in everything I can though! It'll inspire great guilt and resulting work. (Note to self: next year complete the varnishing program in June!)

Too bad Scott, I was hoping to meet you. I've got to head out Sunday evening to Port Townsend for the Fiddle Tunes Festival, so Victoria will be untended on Monday. A friend will be bringing her back to my slip for me.
I'll keep an ey eout for you Bruce. It's nice to have an event that coincides with the show. Now if you could just work out another one in the fall for Port Townsend WBF you'd be all set. ;)

Jamie,
Maybe I'll call it quits early on Saturday, and swing on by.

Well...I'll be around most of the weekend, either at PIRATE (http://www.r-boat.org/), or helping with sailing the PIRATE pond yachts.
I'm also told I may be teaching a little swing dance/jitterbug Saturday evening as our local public radio station (KUOW (http://www.kuow.org/) 94.9 mHz FM) is doing a live broadcast of their Saturday night swing/jazz/etc. show
http://www.kuow.org/images/swingyears.gif (http://www.kuow.org/swing_years.asp)
from the wooden boat festival.
I've was asked if I could do a little impromptu workshop before the show starts.
The Swing Years and Beyond broadcasts from 7pm—midnight. Forumites elsewhere can listen to the show live over the 'net as KUOW's feed streams live (http://www.kuow.org/listen_live.html)—in West Australia, for example, the tunes will start coming your way at 10:00am Sunday 4 July.
A lot of nice wood boats, some local forumites in attendance, Bruce Hooke in all the way from R.I. and good beer. However, the clincher is watching Nicholas doing the jitterbug (in period correct clothing perhaps?). I'm not going to miss this one.

We motored Victoria over to the Center and I'll stop by tomorrow to freshen up the varnish and generally tart her up to look her best. I thought the fireworks were going to be the high point of the weekend, but that Jitterbug session sounds like a hot one. :D
Don't forget to stop by and say Hi and especially encourage all your friends who are having fantasies of wooden boat ownership to come to the show. It's free this year and I have reliable information that some very fine craft will be sporting for sale signs. (Hmmm, now I wonder which one that might be... ;) )

I tried emailing Kermit, but his mailbox is full, suggesting he's not looked at it for a long time - or I don't have the correct one.

I spent the afternoon and evening with Jamie Haskell, Nicholas Carey and Art Read (all fellow forumites) aboard Jamie's "Victoria" at the Wooden boat Festival. Had scrumptuous homemade chili and cornbread along with the other exhibitors, staff, volunteers and guests.
Afterwards, we spent some fine hours in the cockpit and cabin of Jamie's boat, along with instant new frieds from the next boat on the dock (a wooden cabin cruiser made by Trojan), talking about a wide variety of subjects, including politics! ;) Nary a harsh word or fisticuffs where exchanged in the slightest degree. Jamie entertained us at times with some impromptu banjo music.
At 11 pm, more or less, the city of Seattle entertained us with a spectacular fireworks show, under a cloudless sky and reflected from Lake Union, thick with boats. Spectacular!
Following the fireworks, we continued our little party, with much consumption of beer (by others). I even had a bit of wine. Around midnight, more fireworks! We think it was the fireworks caterer firing off the misfires and etc. from the main show. These where by no means private fireworks! Shortly thereafter, a fine 45' schooner came powering down the narrow channel (50' wide?) between the Center for Wooden Boats dock and the ubber rich people's marina across the way to her berth. What a sight!
Finally at about 1 am, as the people in the other boats in the raft (dock space being at a premium) went their way home, we did too. Jamie and Art to sleep on their boats (Art camping for the first time on "Melinda") and I and Nicholas to our cars and thence home.
Unforgettable!
Oh my, I forgot completely! Bruce Hooke was there late in the afternoon, but as he was camping down by Federal Way and wanted to get an early start to go off and see Mt. Raineer, he left early. We where all babbling away so briskly that I fear the poor guy didn't get much in. A quiet, friendly sort smile.gif

Yup, as reported I did make it to the show on Sunday and a fine show it was. I'm hoping to drop off the film with the pictures I took later today and when I get the slides back and scanned I will post them for all to see.
Jamie, Art, Meerkat and I had a nice time hanging out in the cockpit of "Victoria", bending our elbows (thanks to Jamie), and talking about boats and occassionally other things too. It sure is nice meeting some of the folks around this forum in person.
I also (of course!) spent some time admiring "Melinda" -- that's one beautiful boat, Art.
Glad to hear that you had a good time Bruce. Sorry that Annie and I weren't able to run into you. We would have enjoyed meeting you. Maybe next time? Lookin forward to seeing your pictures.

Somebody, somewhere, MUST be living right. Beautiful weather, lovely boats, nice folks and explosives! Here's a quick couple of pictures... The first from the 4th. I'm sitting quietly in my cockpit, reading one of the back issues of "WoodenBoat" I scored at the bookseller's when I look up and notice the nicest of the Center's restored Blanchards coming in with a bone her teeth between the docks. A rather frail looking, but obviously competant gentleman at the helm. In a very tight space he had just started his turn to round up into the wind when an over "helpful" runabout owner opposite me gave the Blanchard's stern a nudge, (AWAY from his highly varnished topsides!) and ruined the maneuver. As one of the volunteers manning the docks docks scrambled aboard me to help fend off, I reached across, grabbed his stemhead fitting and "nudged" him off in the direction of his berth. No harm, no foul. We nodded at each other. As the volunteer climbed back onto the dock he winked at me and said, "Not everyday you almost get rammed by a legend, eh?" That's when I remembered Norm Blanchard has always made a point of showing up for these events and sailing aboard one of his companies' old boats. I looked back down the fairway and sure enough, that's who the "old gentleman" was! As I climbed up to the dock myself, Forumite Jamie Hascall was just walking up from HIS vantage point and said, and I quote, "Not everyday you almost get rammed by a legend, eh?" Kinda became the day's "watchword"! ;)
(I managed to snap a quick pic as he passed by MELINDA on his way off the docks...)
