BC Cut the July 7th memorial from opening ceremonies....
The most egregious of these edits was the entire omission of a gorgeous performance by rising Scottish songstress Emeli Sandé, who sang Henry Francis Lyte's hymn "Abide With Me."

Not only was this one of the highlights of the original full ceremony that aired live on Britain's BBC, and not only was this supposed to be a huge break for Emeli (whose excited publicists had widely issued a press release announcing that NBC would broadcast her performance)...but this performance was actually part of a memorial to the 52 victims of the London terrorist attacks of July 7, 2005, so many Britons took this edit as a massive sign of disrespect.

NBC spokesman Greg Hughes explained the omission to USA Today with a mere: "Our programming is tailored for the U.S. audience."

Apparently, NBC executives assumed that the U.S. audience would not be interested in a performance by a relatively unknown British singer, or in a tribute to victims of tragedies that didn't take place on U.S. soil.

Right befor the opening ceremony, NBC played a brief movie ending with a rapid montage of the programs or posters from the modern games starting with Athens in 1896 to Beijing in 2008.

I guess I can understand why they left out the 1936 Berlin Olympics... but can't figure out why the left out Los Angeles ('84) and Atlanta ('96). All others were included.

What, they left out Jesse Owens in Berlin? Shameful.

May be they knew that Americans would remember them, but needed a reminder that the other cities exist?http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-taunt014.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)
