Any one perhaps aware of interesting winter projects in the maritimes? Other than the on going stuff at the martime museum in Halifax, haven't been able to find much. Am interested primarily in Nova Scotia stuff but would like to hear about any traditional type projects. Thanks

Billy Ludwick is putting a new stem, keel and stern post in Ellie in his shop in Indian Point near Mahone Bay. Also converting a Stevens sloop to a schooner. Going there is a step back in time.
Where the heck is Orangeville? I thought I knew everyplace in Nova Scotia

Bill Ludwicks would be on my "FIRST place to visit" list in Nova Scotia  ... after Michaels of cause... then he could take me down there and into me which would mean that Bill would take it that I actually know somethin!! :D Cause then he would start talkin and he would loose me around about the second "eh" tongue.gif but maybe hed give me somethin safe to do like some serious sandpaper work ;) And after that long visit then the serious stuff of gettin out and meeting everyone would begin!!!

Id heard a whisper that he was doing some serious work on Elly this season about time eh!

JJ, Howard always seems to have some interesting projects going. smile.gif
So Howard and Michael - how about bringing your cameras to Billy's and showing us what he's doing with Elly? And how's it going with the new marine railway, Howard? Is Malolo on the hard? We need pictures! :D

The first site Google returned looked promising...it had a link which promised an "Orangedale regional map." So, I clicked on that link and got a red star in the middle of field of blue. OK, I said, maybe we're dealing with a little island, so let's zoom out a bit and see if we can get some mainland. Sure enough, after a good bit of zooming out, I found some mainland...but the mainland was the west coast of Africa. According to this website, Orangedale is apparently about 600 miles south of Accra, Ghana, and 700 miles west of Libreville, Gabon!

Never having heard of a Canadian-held island over near West Africa, I thought maybe I should look a little further before taking this map at its word, so I did a bit more investigating and found a map I trusted quite a bit more that placed Orangedale in Inverness County, a bit north of the west end of Bras d'Or Lakes, which I found considerably more believable!

As of last week, Bill hadn't started work on Elly, but she is on the railway inside his building. In addition to Elly and the schooner conversion, he is building a lapstrake tender to his own design (from a half model he made) for a client. Busy winter for him!

Another Nova Scotia project is the Cape Islander that Michael (MMD) designed and is being built at Stevens yard in Chester. I went to see it with Michael - what a beauty! I can't wait to see her on the water.

Our railway is near complete (we just need to bolt plates across the rail joints) and we plan on hauling out next weekend, weather permitting. Hopefully that will be uneventful!

We haven't quite given up on the season yet - we went out for a sail this morning and hope to get out again a couple more times before haulout. We have to amortize that pilothouse and woodstove, you know smile.gif !

And Steven, you'll be glad to hear that I've got the two gaffs for the Eun Mara cut, tapered and ready for gluing. Finally, eh?

Well, I guess I have to get up towards Cape Breton more often. Perhaps the oft talked about cruise to the Bras D'Or needs to get actioned.
Howard, is that picture out near Tanners Pass?

JJboatman - I am in the proces of finishing off a 24' strip built lobster boat, if you happen to be driving on the new trans-Canada in central New Brunswick. It has been an interesting and demanding three years - launch is scheduled with the local keel-boats next spring.
