WASHINGTON – Dick Cheney, who knows a thing or two about the vice presidency, called John McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate “a mistake” in his first interview since undergoing a heart transplant in March.

Speaking with ABC News’ Jonathan Karl, Cheney also revealed that he’s offered his advice on possible vice presidential choices to Mitt Romney and Beth Myers, who is heading the campaign’s search for a running mate. Palin was presumably not on his shortlist.

“I like Gov. Palin. I’ve met her. I know her. She's an attractive candidate,” Cheney said in an except aired on “This Week.” “But based on her background, she’d only been governor for, what, two years? I don’t think she passed that test … of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake.”

McCain's choice for VP was worse than Dubya's?

Discuss.

McCain only sank his own campaign by selecting Sarah Palin as his VP running mate.

Dubya's choice contributed to sinking the entire country. Endless war, endless debt. "Ronald Reagan proved that deficits don't matter.'

So Cheney finally agrees with what the liberals have been snickering about since McCain made his choice. Welcome to the dance Dick, better late than never.

I can't wait to see who Mitt choses to elevate his chances.

Cheney is just saying this now? Why not four years ago when the decision was made? Wimp.

And what was he saying just before the last presidential election? What disinformation was he offering to voters? This, from Sept. '08:

“I think she’s a good candidate and I don’t see any reason why she can’t be an effective vice president,” Cheney told reporters travelling with him on a trip to Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine and Italy.

One can also pull up clips from Sec. Of Defense Cheney explaining why taking Baghdad after pushing Iraq out of Kuwait was not worth pursuing. He said it would be a quagmire. But the election of 2000 and 9/11 changed all that, unlike Sarah Palin Cheney, Rumsfeld and the neocons were more than ready.
