Finishing up an 8' John Gardner pram. I'd planned on covering them with strips of metal. They're made of Douglas Fir (I'm in the NW). I laid out the metal on a stringer and it didn't line up, as if the stringer isn't straight. I was very careful insuring the stringers were parallel to the keel strip. I'm guessing it's because of the twist of the bottom planking. Now I'm back to thinking about using 1/2" thick wood screwed not nailed (shaken not stirred) and not glued so they can be replaced when necessary. I'd like to hear some thoughts on this. Hardwood, softwood, just another strip of fir? I was thinking hardwood because I might add it to the outwales also. But maybe softwood would be better there?
