Nice job. I've got a friend whos father enjoys making furniture for a hobby. Made all my friends dining room furniture out of Ironbark ( I'm pretty sure thats what he said). Looks fantastic, but its so heavy it neads 4 people to move the dining table....its 2" thick slabs and huge legs.

Oh dude ... that is wrong in soo many ways

I'd love to see how he takes off when there is a small ripple. Running start anyone?

Oh, BTW great table Dingo. My brother got his hands on some small slabs of Huon Pine when he was in Tassie a while ago. He's got the same plans for them I believe. (might get him to add some engine mounts while he is at it ;) )

Egad no!!! Ive just gotten outta the damned dog house mate why would I wanna risk it all over again and shove an outboard on it!! flamin eck!

On another note!!!

I just got the shock of me life a few tics back... I went wandering as I do from time to time and found a site called Australian woodcraft (http://www.australianwoodcraft.com.au) and honestly I almost croaked on the spot!!

Now when I finished this thing I thought you know if I were to sell it how much would I ask for it? and I considered oh about $500 maybe $600 and promptly gave it to her highness the loverly possumpoop... so anyways here I am ganderin around at the woodcraft site and lo and behold I sees this...

http://www.australianwoodcraft.com.au/Beaufort_CTable_Small.jpg

So this thing is 1500L x 900W x 410H made of Jarrah... now Jarrah around here is stuff we burn in the fireplace everyones got it and its a rather bloody boring timber... anyway

So when I saw that thing I raced out to the living room grabbed a tape measure from her sewing table and measured mine up there up... 1450L x 503W x 306H...

They also have another made of you guessed it Jarrah again

http://www.australianwoodcraft.com.au/CTable_Jarrah_Habitat.jpg

1300L x 750W x 400H (mm)

and the only one that used more than Jarrah was this one

http://www.australianwoodcraft.com.au/Wandoo_coffee_table_c-up2.jpg

Which is Wandoo surrounded and supported by you guessed it Jarrah... sigh and its size is... 1050L x 630W x 450H

Now the thing that got me was the prices... so the first one up there was $1,365 {theres a smaller one available 1200 x 720 x 410 (mm) for $1,050 but thats considerable smaller than mine so...} the second one is $1,250 and the final one {with the Wandoo} is also $1,250

I mean ****e mates!!! $1365 for a straight up just Jarrah coffee table nothing special about it just a Jarrah coffee table???? no turned legs no mixes of textures, hues or colours no full width top no nothing just blocks of Jarrah smoothed and varnished and fitted together

STREWTH!!! Imagine if those dopey buggars got really adventurous and used ooh shall we say... Jarrah for the legs... Sheoak for the rails... and lets say they used a peice of bark to bark Tuart for the top and imagine if they actually did something out of the boring and hand "turned" the legs!!... What the heck would it be worth????

As I said I was and am totally gobsmacked shocked and utterly stunned by this... and I sure can feel a coffee table frenzie comin on!! :D

That's gorgeous! I have always wanted to make a slab coffee table but have never found at a reasonable cost the appropriate pc (a nice Clara walnut would be just right) however...I can't resist showing off this one; the veneer cost me a 26er of wisky in 75 and I held onto it till 2000 when I built this (for myself).

It's 10' long with two 2' leaves on sliding dove tailed rails.
It's Koa, figured maple and polished stainless sreel.
The tressel base is tensioned with concealed airplane cable that makes it extreamly stiff.
The Koa is very highly figured and has a tung oil finish.

Thanks Dave... I guess your right its just a simple plank topped table and not up with those fellas but think about it for a sec... all they have is either a single plank flattened shanded and covered in laquer and then they have simple tenon and motice rails into straight legs... same wood nothing special just Jarrah... Swan River at least uses some different timbers for some of their work... Well Marri and Pine :rolleyes: ...but again most is as above or several peices of the same timber thicknessed biscuited together sanded down and slathered with laquer a couple of straight peices for the legs a couple of rails tenoned in and done {well not quite I know but for simplicity and shortening this posts sake ;) }

Im not denigratin their work either but thats what it is does that make it worth that much? cause Swan made it? cause some fella called themselves an artist made a peice and put it on consignment to Australian Woodcraft and cause of that its worth so much?

I find it increadible that they can ask such prices for what is essentially a block on blocks of the same dark red timber with no differing hues or textures! boring and yet incredible that they do ask those outragious prices

Anyway thanks for the links

Gert thats a beauty!... see now with a mix of textures highlighting that centre Koa stunning... well to my eye far more stunning than boring peieces of the same timbers... thats exactly what Im getting at!!

If you go to buy a coffee table out of timber what do you look for aside from firmness of connections and solidity? mmmm the basic fact is that you look for something that is going to give you pleasure to look at! something that is going to make an impression every time you look at it or someone else looks at it when they visit... in an office situation you want your business peers that visit to be impressed by the look and feel of the furnishings dont you? The quality look of that makes someone think this is exceptional its beautiful... a table such as Gerts as a coffee table in an office situation say the foyer waiting room would have people impressed by the quality and attention to detail your business extends... attention to detail beauty of look and form... may not sell your business but it would impress them if its extended throughout wouldnt it?... sure sometimes simple beauty stands out and sometimes too much is over powering but were talking about a coffee table... imagine a board room table in Koa with edges in Sheoak legs of Tuart and chairs of Mahogany with say Sassafras inserts... Now that is worth payin prices like this for!...

Boring beauty or stand out beauty full of rich hues and textures with outstanding features of the timber itself? thats what got me incredulous about these things.

Gerts Koa one or the boring Jarrah ones? My Sheoak one or the Tuart Jarrah and Sheoak one or a boring Jarrah one? see where Im coming from? you go into a office and your there to get business or meet for a business confrence and you see Gerts stunning one there as a coffee table your automatically impressed it puts a lasting impression on your mind you will probably even ask about it try to find out who made it what wood it is how much it cost etc etc etc... but a boring Jarrah one? ho hum...

now I gotta consider here that someone may come back and say "but hang on Shane are you saying that the Sheoak one you did is boring because its only Sheoak?"... The difference is is that Sheoak is fairly highly figured it is bright colored lace to look at so the figureing is easy to see and highlight whereas the Jarrah that Ive seen in these sites above is simply a deep red Jarrah nice enough but typically boring a little figure but nothing special that jumps out and grabs you... Im saying that those prices dont seem to equate with what Id call interesting peices. {this is of course IMO which is always subjective}

Im not goin to get all excited and go bang out a dozen coffee tables on the basis of this either  although I may have given that impression it was said tongue in cheek... I was just totally surprised at the prices they were asking for what are essentially boring peices of Jarrah.

Thanks Gert its truely stunning.

Dave musta had a duhh moment... sanded was meant... as for "laquer" that was an attempt at a somewhat generic term meaning a covering from french polishin to varnish and everything in between... I know they are not nothing alike but I was TRYIN to keep the post short so took some shortcuts! failed miserably as usual  ah well least ways you knew what I meant other than the shanded of course ;)

Now why the blazes did he pull his posts this time? ****e we were gettin on right well too! first time in a couple of years we have had a civil discourse wich was bloody great  Where was the problem that he had to yank his posts? surely there was no problem with anything I said this time!! bloody hell!...

I sure dont understand some people  I mean someone posts a few helpful posts and theyre appreciated a polite discussion ensues and suddenly they pull their posts? why? doesnt make sence

Anyway Im not gonna worry about it... such is life... silly thing to do I would have thought and rather weird but there you go.

Thanks Karen... I really enjoyed makin this one its color and texture really stands out well and best part... SHE loves it!! definantly a winner! ;) So I went out to the shed again yesty and made her a sweet little microwave oven stand with a couple of inlays now THAT is a real joy of an activity that inlay caper! but fun just the same... and she loves that too so Im on a roll here! :D

Anyway not to worry I enjoyed the discussion and thanks for the links.
