Stumbled across this boatbuilder's site and found it interesting even though I don't read Finnish. Nice looking boat, and he apparently builds by eye. The links on his homepage take you to photos of the building process.

Hi

He builds traditional boats; in a couple of pics you can see molds so it isn't quite by the eye. Nice boats...

BTW, I visited the Finnish Boat Show that ended last weekend - there was a good-sized wooden boat area, about 15 different; motorboats, sailing dayboats, dinghies, etc. Hadn't a camera with me so I have no pics from there... Specialties also included Finland's largest rowing boat, the Kuikka, and a 12-metre Viking ship, the Heimlosa Rus. They have a website of sorts at http://tuikku.uwasa.fi/rk/heimlosa.rus/photo -sailed actually 'around' Europe 1996-2001... - they haven't updated the site too often it seems.
I'll try to find a better site...

Seppo, what is that black stuff seen oozing from between the planking laps?
A countryman of yours, Pekka Huhta <phuhta@cc.hut.fi>, posts here occassionaly and has a nice web site too.

Hi

(had a short vacation, no computer in sight! nice...)

The black stuff is tar, with caulking.
